They were ousted by Kitchener-Waterloo with a 10-2 loss being denied the chance to head to the finals. The team, however, won most of its games over the weekend and is having a great season. The team’s next home game is June 15 when Mildmay comes to Brussels. (Photo submitted) It was a busy week for the WOAA Brussels squirts. The Tigers played host to Walkerton on June 1 and celebrated an 8-5 victory behind the solid pitching of Jack Pipe and Wyatt Machan. With back-to-back wins at home, the team travelled to Mitchell’s Annual Fastball Tournament on the June 3 weekend. In the opener on Friday night, the Tigers walked away with a solid 19-4 win over the Mitchell home team. Pitching their way to the win, Jessica Johnston, Dylan McNeil and Pipe put in solid performances while the rest of the team contributed offensively. On Saturday morning the Tigers faced their biggest challenge when they faced a skilled OASA Level team from Stouffville. The Tigers won their fourth straight game of the year with an 8-5 victory. On Saturday afternoon the Tigers squared off in a great battle against the Squirt team from Innerkip. Logan Kellington and Machan pitched a fantastic game but came up short in a close 5-4 loss. The strong performance put in on Saturday had the team advancing into Sunday where they faced Kitchener-Waterloo. Machan pitched a great game however KW had a strong team with aggressive baserunning that proved to be too much. Kellington and Bennett Newell both scored on solo homeruns however, it was not enough as KW advanced to the Championship with a 10-2 victory. Brussels finished the tournament in third place. The coaching staff and parents were really impressed with how well the team played against high level teams from very large communities. The Bronze Medal team included, Pipe, Johnston, Machan, NcNeil, Kellington, Newell, Connor Den- Dekker, Connor Bridge, Jake Mitchell, Nolan Johnston, Mitchell Ward, and Jarron Thompson. The team’s next home game is June 15 against Mildmay at 7 p.m. Squirts get third in tournament The Wingham Golf and Curling Club welcomed the month of June and early indications look very positive. The golfers came with the sunshine and many hit the links for the first round of the year. The Tuesday ladies had to endure some extreme heat that many of the girls were happy to see even though it was a drastic change in temperature. Next Tuesday, June 14 the gals invite you, as well as female golfers from Maitland, Sunset and Blackhorse, to come out and play a fun scramble before a full porkchop supper in the dining lounge. Please contact Maxine Robinson as soon as possible if interested. Wednesday, June 1 the club hosted a busload of golfers supporting the Big Brothers. This is an annual event the club has glady supported and look forward to continued participation for years to come. Following the group the 20 patient Wednesday senior morning men reclaimed their course. The winners were: low net, Glenn McMichael; second, Gar Lawrence and Jamie Sanderson finishing third. Ed Daer shot a 39 to take low gross with Brian Skinn coming in with a 40. Wayne Gordon went home with the prize for longest putt. It was great to see Lawrence, our Kitchener native member back as well as the birthday boy, 91-year-old Clayton Ruppel, take part in the day. The Thursday night men had a record turnout this past week with 66 golfers enjoying a great night for golf. Dave Bartman was winner of the longest drive with Mark Foxton winning closest to the pin (inches away from a hole in one). The longest putt winners were Doug Vanderwoude, Kent McPherson and Jay Marston and hidden scores went to Jason Goodall, Neil Bieman, Dan McPherson, Shawn Jolliffe, Ryan Walker and Lloyd Erb. Saturday, despite a severe thunderstorm in the morning, Dave Montgomery still managed to round up the Goodtimers hockey team to come out and enjoy a beautiful afternoon and 18 holes of golf. On Sunday, the club hosted a retirement party for Pat Templeman. Pat a 29-year employee from Zehrs in Listowel, with around 50 co- workers, family and friends, played nine holes of golf followed by a barbecue lunch on the scenic patio.
