Dry weather allows farmers tocatch up on crops, spring work
It has been a wonderful week on
the farm. The stretch of good
weather has allowed many farmers
to get it done. I guess crop advisor
Don was right when he predicted
that June would be dry. Hopefully
the rest of the corn made it into the
ground. Many acres of soybeans
were planted, spraying done and hay
was cut and put in. A very good
week in the world of farming.
Catching up with those in hospital
include Mary Mann in Listowel for
the past week. Ruth Lowe has been
suffering health issues and was a
patient in Seaforth, but things can
change quickly. Doreen Hackwell is
still in Seaforth Hospital.
Our condolences are extended to
the Rapson family on the death of
Ruth Rapson. Our sympathies to
Dave, Mary and Bill on the loss of
their mother.
Our condolences to the Craig
family on the passing of Bill Craig.
He will be missed by his wife
Isabelle and family Ross, Murray,
Roger and Mary. Our sympathies to
all.
Returning from a short trip away
is Clarence and Marie McCutcheon.
They went to Myrtle Beach, South
Carolina to enjoy a getaway. They
were celebrating a special birthday
of Marie’s.
Returning from an annual fishing
trip is a group of Walton men. Matt,
Jason and Brad Shortreed, Fred,
Darrel and Adam McClure and
Carman, Michael and Christopher
Bernard. They have ben going to
Lindsay for over 25 years and have a
great time. They report good fishing
and lots of perch and pickerel and
enjoying good meals while away.
Congratulations to Ian Wilbee
who became a great-grandfather last
week. Scott and Erin Henderson are
the proud parents of a baby boy
called Mason. Proud grandparents
are Murray and Carol Henderson.
Congrats to all.
Our condolences to Judy Lee and

How it works
Huron-Bruce MP Ben Lobb was at Grey Central Public
School late last month to speak to Mary Kennedy’s Grade
4/5 class about how government works. Lobb touched on
subjects such as how a bill is made into a law, the
composition of the House of Commons, the budget and his
own salary. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
Trailer park remains municipal
A motion to declare the Brussels
trailer park property surplus and to
make plans to dispose of it was
defeated by Huron East Council at
its May 3 meeting.
After a lengthy closed session,
councillors made the motion, but in
a recorded vote, it was defeated with
just Councillor Bill Siemon voting
in favour of declaring the property
surplus.
Brussels Councillor Joe Seili said
that there haven’t been many
property standards issues at the park
to speak of and the park has been
good for residents with lower
incomes to be able to have a place of
their own.
While Seili was against declaring
the property surplus, if it were to be
declared surplus, he felt revenue
from the sale should be returned to
the Brussels Ward.
“It’s part of the Brussels
community and it should go
back to Brussels rather than go
back into the general revenue,” Seili
said.
Seili said that before council
decided to make the decision,
perhaps members should speak to
residents of the park and see what
they think.
Clerk-Administrator Jack
McLachlan said that the only legal
obligations that Huron East would
have to the park’s tenants would be
the same obligations that a landlord
would have to a tenant in a
building’s lease if the building was
sold.

Rugby team
makes OFSAA
consolation
By Mikenna Lane
Congratulations St. Anne’s
Catholic Secondary School, the
students have made it to the last
stretch of the school year.
The Girls Rugby team entered
June with a bang as they did an
excellent job at OFSAA last week
and made it to the consolation finals.
Although they were defeated, the
girls had another excellent season
and St. Anne’s is very proud.
The school’s tennis team
competed in a tournament that took
place on Wednesday, June 1, the
Junior Girls and Boys Soccer teams
competed at the Huron-Perth
championship in Listowel and St.
Marys.
St. Anne’s law students ventured
to the courthouse in Goderich this
past week in order to obtain a more
thorough understanding of how the
judicial system works.
Co-op students presented all that
they have done thus this far in the
semester at the Co-op Fair.
Thanks all of the school’s
community partners who guide St.
Anne’s students in the placements.
It really is a great opportunity to link
education with future careers.
