Looks like they will be a good crop this year! Dry weather allows farmers tocatch up on crops, spring work It has been a wonderful week on the farm. The stretch of good weather has allowed many farmers to get it done. I guess crop advisor Don was right when he predicted that June would be dry. Hopefully the rest of the corn made it into the ground. Many acres of soybeans were planted, spraying done and hay was cut and put in. A very good week in the world of farming. NEWS FROM WALTON By Jo-Ann McDonald Call 887-6570 PEOPLE AROUND WALTON How it works Huron-Bruce MP Ben Lobb was at Grey Central Public School late last month to speak to Mary Kennedy’s Grade 4/5 class about how government works. Lobb touched on subjects such as how a bill is made into a law, the composition of the House of Commons, the budget and his own salary. (Shawn Loughlin photo) Trailer park remains municipal A motion to declare the Brussels trailer park property surplus and to make plans to dispose of it was defeated by Huron East Council at its May 3 meeting. After a lengthy closed session, councillors made the motion, but in a recorded vote, it was defeated with just Councillor Bill Siemon voting in favour of declaring the property surplus. Brussels Councillor Joe Seili said that there haven’t been many property standards issues at the park to speak of and the park has been good for residents with lower incomes to be able to have a place of their own. While Seili was against declaring the property surplus, if it were to be declared surplus, he felt revenue from the sale should be returned to the Brussels Ward. “It’s part of the Brussels community and it should go back to Brussels rather than go back into the general revenue,” Seili said. Seili said that before council decided to make the decision, perhaps members should speak to residents of the park and see what they think. Clerk-Administrator Jack McLachlan said that the only legal obligations that Huron East would have to the park’s tenants would be the same obligations that a landlord would have to a tenant in a building’s lease if the building was sold. By Shawn Loughlin The Citizen Rugby team makes OFSAA consolation By Mikenna Lane Congratulations St. Anne’s Catholic Secondary School, the students have made it to the last stretch of the school year. The Girls Rugby team entered June with a bang as they did an excellent job at OFSAA last week and made it to the consolation finals. Although they were defeated, the girls had another excellent season and St. Anne’s is very proud. The school’s tennis team competed in a tournament that took place on Wednesday, June 1, the Junior Girls and Boys Soccer teams competed at the Huron-Perth championship in Listowel and St. Marys. St. Anne’s law students ventured to the courthouse in Goderich this past week in order to obtain a more thorough understanding of how the judicial system works. Co-op students presented all that they have done thus this far in the semester at the Co-op Fair. Thanks all of the school’s community partners who guide St. Anne’s students in the placements. It really is a great opportunity to link education with future careers.
