There was plenty to do and plenty to see Saturday night at the Brussels Lions Club’s annual
Elimination Draw at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre, but it was Klaas (left)
and Shelley Jorritsma who came away with the big prize of $4,000. The Jorritsmas were
awarded their cheque by Brussels Lions Club Vice-President Gerry Exel (right). (Photo submitted)
There’s music in the air. The Lions
Club held its annual Elimination
Draw at the Brussels, Morris and
Grey Community Centre on
Saturday night with another year of
good food and entertainment. This
well-supported event is a major
fundraiser for the club. The dollars
raised by this venture are then
shared throughout the wider
community and here at home. Most
of us can think of at least three ways
that we’ve benefitted from the work
of the Lions medical assistance
funds, youth trips and village
parades are what enter my mind
first. A wide range of ages enjoyed
the music of the Ballagh bunch as
their dinner digested, while balloon
animals and painted faces kept the
young crowd happy. Well done, once
again fellas.
Ethel United Church was
celebrating on Sunday. Habitat for
Humanity brought a message of
sharing and caring in our world
while Glenda Morrison helped out
sister Susan Alexander in the music
department by bringing the Brussels
United choir out to help with the
celebrations.
With the choir in fine form, an
evening of music with dessert was
offered on Sunday evening at the
United Church. The school band, the
3Ds and Sonny and Cher offered
their talents to the appreciative
audience. So lots of music to enjoy.
When you’re making summer
plans with the children in your life,
be sure to mark down, right now,
Kid’s Corner is Aug. 1-5 in the
afternoon. This is a great diversion
for the grandkids, so this might be a
good week for a visit. “Taste and see
that God is Good” is this year’s
theme so that offers lots of
possibilities. Of course help is
always appreciated so a call to
Yvonne at 519-887-6098 or the
church at 519-887-6388 will
indicate your willingness to be part
of this fun week.
Don’t you just shake your head in
wonder sometimes? My wonder
moment last week was about two
visiting hummingbirds at my friend
Jeanette King’s house. They were
fairly new to her feeder but figured
out very quickly that she could be
found at the window by the kitchen
sink and if they darted about long
enough in her view line she would
do the right thing. So one more point
for Mother Nature and the many
ways of communication, without
words.
Enjoy all the joys of June.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
By Jo-Ann McDonaldThe Brussels Legion Branch heldits general meeting on Tuesday
evening and held installation of
officers. Comrade Glenn Bridge
presided as installing officer for the
ceremony with Comrade Eric Ross
assisting. President is Comrade Deb
Caan; first vice, Comrade Jo-Ann
McDonald; secretary, Comrade
Sandra Josling; Sergeant-at-Arms,
Comrade Lisa Glanville; executive,
Comrades Eric Ross, Andy
Overholt, Andy Adams, Wanda
Walker and Mabel Glanville.
Members of the executive who were
absent will be installed at the next
meeting.
Business was conducted by new
President Deb Caan. A donation
was passed for a youth forum at F.E.
Madill Secondary School and for
the foursome attending provincial
darts in Kingston. There are three
local athletes attending district track
and field in Guelph in June and a
representative is required to present
proficiency awards at the Brussels
Public School graduation banquet.
Nevada tickets are low and new
ones need to be ordered. The
canteen is to be painted, stock foryear-end has been done and thedraft lines need to be cleaned.
House reports that there were
plumbing problems again this week
and repairs were needed. The men’s
room upstairs has been painted, as
has the back wall of the auditorium
Comrades Eric Ross and Bob
Richardson participated in zone
golf on Saturday. They played at
Seaforth golf course and finished
fifth for the day and will advance to
district play.
The Branch was the venue for the
celebration of Sharon Stephenson’s
65th birthday. Daughters Corrina
and Chantele managed to surprise
their mom with a very special guest.
The D.J. was Elvis impersonator
Shon Carroll and he was great. The
over 150 family and friends enjoyed
a fantastic evening and so did
Sharon. Happy birthday Sharon.
The Branch supplied the hors
d’oevres for the night and the ladies
helping included Deb Caan and
Judy Lee for prep along with Jo-
Ann McDonald, Mary Bradshaw
and Mabel Glanville who helped
serve at night.
