Locals take ‘Bucket List’ trip Local families welcome new additions The weather is the key topic of conversation with most people. Yes, the farmers are getting more than a little anxious about getting onto the fields, but unfortunately, Mother Nature is not co-operating. From what I understand, hay farmers are happy with the lush green growth and will hope it stops raining in June to get it off. My crop advisor Don says it’s going to dry up in June, so we will wait and see if he is a good weather forecaster. Some farmers who do not have all their corn planted are talking of switching to soybeans, even white beans, if time runs out for corn. Those not able to spray their wheat by ground method, are having the airplane spray the crop. My children were amazed at how low the plane was flying to apply the spray and were very excited to see it done. Folks who are not farmers are alsocomplaining about the rain. “I canhardly get my grass cut between rains and it looks like a hay field” some say. Others complain they can’t get their flowerbeds done because it is so wet. So, it’s not just farmers who like to complain. Good news! Howard Hackwell is home from hospital and is feeling better. Doreen Hackwell is still in Seaforth and hoping that her leg will come along soon. We send get-well wishes to Pat Langlois and hope she is feeling better soon. Congratulations to Paul and Corrina Dawson on the birth of their son. Ryan is welcomed to the family by big brother Zack and sister Laura. Congratulations to Scott and Leanne Somers on the birth of a baby boy named Ty. He is the third grandchild for Ross and Judy Somers and great-grandma Jane White reports he is the 14th great- grandchild for her and Clarence. There are troubles all around the world and many people of Great Slave Lake community have lost everything. Elunid McNair’s grandson, Mike Henry, lives in Calgary, and his job has a connection to the devastated community. Mike is the head developer for buildingZehrs grocery stores. The store theybuilt in great Slave Lake was completely destroyed by the wild fires and will now have to be rebuilt. Congratulations to Nikki Vanderveen and Robert Wynja who were married at the Blyth Christian Reformed Church on Saturday. Nikki is the daughter of former Walton residents Andy and Darlene Vanderveen. The wedding party was beautiful in black and yellow and brightened the spring day. The weather managed to stay dry for the couple to greet their guests following the wedding outside the church. The reception was held in Seaforth and the hall was beautifully decorated in rustic barnboards and grasses. The couple will reside near Seaforth. Congratulations to Robert and Nikki. Congratulations to Sarah Little and Mark (Ev denToom) who were married at Atwood on Saturday. Sarah is the daughter of Ted and Marlene Little. The wedding, dinner and reception were held at the Community Centre. The hall was decorated with a rustic theme and the black and teal green of the wedding party made it look lovely. A highlight for Sarah’s day was her father, Ted, was able to walk her down the aisle. When thecelebrations were concluded, thebride and groom, pulling a little red wagon, were able to walk home to their home in Atwood. Congratulations to Sarah and Mark. The home of Jim and Evelyn Blake was the venue for a shower for Katie Williamson. The hosts were the “Blake” girls: Heather, Lisa and Loraine, along with mom, Evelyn. The guests were members of the Blake, Williamson and Deitner families for the come-and-go event. Nearly 50 relatives were able to attend and Katie received many beautiful gifts. The group enjoyed dessert and coffee or punch and had a lovely afternoon. Katie will wed Darren Janmaat in July. Doug Schroeder has returned from a great getaway with three old school friends from Listowel. Dubbed the “Bucket List Trip”, the gentlemen flew to Las Vegas and joined a bus trip tour that headed west. They went to California for the majority of the trip and went to six baseball games at five different ball parks. They saw two games in Los Angeles and one each in Oakland, San Francisco, San Diego and back to Phoenix, Arizona for another. The driver of the bus, whose last name was Schroeder, no relation, was fantastic. Doug reports that the hilly roads of San Francisco, do go straight up and down, and he will stick to driving the less challenging roads of Huron county. The group enjoyed many extra tours including a boat ride around the Bay, around the island of Alcatraz Prison, under the Golden Gate Bridge, over the Golden Gate Bridge and each end of the Golden Gate Bridge. They had Chinese food in Chinatown and travelled the famous Route 66 to its end at the San Francisco pier. There were 11 Canadians on the tour and most were of the senior age category. Doug reports he had a great time and they returned to Las Vegas to catch their flight home again. Welcome back, Doug. It’s nice to see Neil Turnbull here for his annual visit to Walton. He is here from B.C. to check out his properties, friends and family. Rev. Peter has been away at a conference in Sault Ste. Marie this past week. The Sunday service was Men’s Sunday and was led by Graeme Craig downstairs. Graeme’s reflection was entitled “Wonder and Joy”. Flowers were placed in memory of Gerald Watson by the family. A light lunch was enjoyed after the service. The ladies of the UCW provided the luncheon for the funeral of Gerald Watson on Thursday. Thanks to Gloria Wilbee, Group three leader, Helen Craig, Karen Hoegy, Monique Baan, Heidi McClure and the ladies supplying the lunch. Announcements included showers for Walton girls include Stephanie Rijkhoff’s to be held at Duff’s United Church this Friday evening and Katie Williamson’s will be at St. Ambrose Catholic Church on Tuesday, June 7. Duff’s 99th anniversary will be celebrated June 26 at 11 a.m. Guest speaker will be Rev. Randy Banks, former Minister of Duff’s. The Walton Raceway was the host of MUDBOG on Sunday afternoon. There were over 50 trucks, SUVs or whatever arrived to play in the mud. They were allowed to play in the mud from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and play they did. It is really unbelievable the punishment they put their vehicles through and of course, are covered in mud. The rules are simple. Always go the right way and if you get stuck, you hook the chains. There was an excellent turnout of spectators and the weather was great. Rain would not have dampened anyone’s spirits in this sport. Celebrating birthdays this past week include Thea Rijkhoff, Marissa Curreri, Krysta Clarke, Geri-Lee Godkin, Adam Forbes, Rob Shortreed to finish up May. June babies include Scott Henderson, Neil McGavin, Kyle Pryce, Patricia Andrades, Bill Humphries and Ernie Lewington. Happy birthday to all. The Walton Wonders ladies slo- pitch team played their first game this past week. They travelled to Ethel to play the Diehards. The Ethel pitching staff of Susan Alexander and Brenda Boyer kept the Walton batters off the scoreboard for the first three innings, while they tallied three runs against Walton. The fourth inning finally had Walton score two runs on a single by LeeAnn Konarski, a triple by Jolene McNichol and single by Veronica Grobbink. The Diehards replied with two more runs in the fourth and three in the fifth. Walton earned only one more run in the sixth when Jo-Ann McDonald hit for a double and scored on singles by Lee Ann and Jolene. The Diehards finished the scoring with two more runs to make the final score 10-3 for the Diehards. The diamond was damp and outfield very wet in places, but at least it did not rain while playing. • Custom application for post spraying of corn, beans, grains, and pasture ground • Row crop spraying • Low soil compaction • Very accurate • Hay and pasture ground needs that extra boost • Spreaders readily available • Terra-Gators • Bulk delivery unit CROP PROTECTION FERTILIZERS We will customize a fertilizer and crop protection program specific to your requirements.
