SportsGirls rugby team takes fourth WOSSAA trophy
The St. Anne’s Catholic
Secondary School girls rugby team
battled against Woodstock
Collegiate on Tuesday, May 24 as
they won their fourth straight A/AA
WOSSAA title and a chance at the
OFSAA championship.
The Eagles attacked early and
often as they knifed through the
Woodstock defence which were
forced into merely trying to
withstand the dominant Eagle
attack. Captain Lisa Van Osch led
the way with three trys on the day,
and fellow forward Amy Ditner
came in with two scores of her own.
Steph Sluys added to her team
leading point total by notching a
single try and converting three kicks.
The performance was capped off
by Madison Sjaarda as gave St.
Anne’s a 41-0 lead and their fourth
straight A/AA WOSSAA
championship.
Coach Ryan Clancy was
extremely proud of the development
of the team throughout the season,
and thinks they have a chance to see
some real success at the next level.
The girls will now regroup with a
couple of practices and attempt to
make some real noise as they
challenge the best rugby teams in
Ontario next week.
The girls team reached the
championship game by beating the
Stratford Northwestern Huskies 21-
7 for the Huron-Perth title.
The regular season saw the girls
team win three of their four matches.
St. Anne’s beats Woodstock
St. Anne’s Catholic Secondary School took to the pitch on May 25 for their first WOSSAA
match at F.E. Madill Secondary School against Woodstock Collegiate Institute. Despite a
rough and tumble match, St. Anne’s emerged the victor and took on their host in the final game
of the tournament, but were unable to capture a second win. (Denny Scott photo)
Rain disrupts fastball schedule
Weather played havoc with the
Huron County Fastball League
schedule during the past weekend.
The Blyth Barons were scheduled
to travel to Wingham on May 25 for
a game against the Hitmen. The
game was postponed due to the
weather and will be played at a later
date.
The Walton Brewers were
scheduled to host the Belmore
Stingers, but the game was
postponed due to rain and will be
played at a later date.
The Brussels Tigers were
supposed to host the Stratford
Memorials, but the game was not
played because of the weather and
will be rescheduled to a later date.
The Brewers were scheduled to
travel to Stratford on Sunday for a 7
p.m. contest. Game results were not
available at press time. The Brewers
were to host the Sebringville entry
in the league on Tuesday, but results
were not available at press time.
The Barons host the Tigers on
Friday beginning at 7:30 p.m. The
Brewers travel to Wroxeter on
Friday for an 8:30 p.m. contest
against the Rippers.
The Tigers travel to Zurich on
Sunday for a 4 p.m. contest against
the Rangers. Walton hosts the
Wingham Hitmen on Tuesday
beginning at 8 p.m.

Madill OFSAA-bound
The Wingham Golf and Curling
Club were eager to flip the calendar
to the month of June today and put
behind a very wet and cold May.
Golf courses across the province are
still looking forward to the warm and
dry summer the experts have
promised.
The Wednesday morning senior
men enjoyed the best weather of the
past week and 24 golfers hit to the
links. Wayne Gordon took low net
honours with Grant Currie, second
and Glen McMichael, third. Don
Bone sank the longest putt and shot
a tidy 39 for low net score of the day.
The Thursday night men were
dealt wet and cold conditions but 32
loyal men’s night golfers still
managed to enjoy their evening out.
The winners were Muzz (Murray)
Coghlin for closest to the pin, Jay
Marston for longest putt and Wayne
Gordon, Dave Bartman and Ross
Danbrook were hidden draw
winners. Martson, along with Trevor
Hopf, didn’t let the conditions bother
their games at they tied for low
gross with a super low 36 each.
The Tuesday night ladies and
Friday night couples saw some
spotty play and the golfers remain
positive on the months ahead. This
Friday, June 3 the club is having its
monthly wing night.
OUT OF BOUNDS NEWS

great cause. Anyone wishing to

Chip and a Putt
– By Bruce Skinn
It was a golden day for F.E. Madill
Secondary School’s track and field
team as athletes achieved 48
‘personal best’ performances in all
areas at the Western Ontario
Secondary School Athletics
Association (WOSSAA) track and
field meet at the University of
Western Ontario on May 19 and 20
in London.
At the completion of the two day
meet, the Madill team was second in
Overall Girls, first in the Junior
Boys division, first in the Senior
Boys division, first in Overall Boys
(for the third consecutive year), and
first in Overall School points.
Thirty athletes earned at least one
top six finish to advance to OFSAA
West Regionals which were held at
the University of Western Ontario
on May 27 and 28.
Six new school records were set
and 27 medals were earned.
The Senior boys 4x100-metre
relay team continued their relentless
assault on the record book once
again lowering their time to 43.64.
The Senior Boys were impressive in
the long and triple jump pits with
Cole Pellett, Michael Ballagh, and
Brayden Pellett all contributing big
points. In the final event of the meet,
the 4x400-metre relay team of
Brayden Pellett, Mike Ballagh, Alex
Peters, and Ben Dailleboust lowered
the existing school record set in
2009 by over two seconds.
The Madill Junior boys division
was very strong with significant
points contributed by every team
member: Adam Cousins, Luke
Dailleboust, Garrett Davidson, Jesse
Fortier, Dennis Knop and Tyrell
Smith.
In Midget Boys, Alex Peters led
the way winning a first in 100-
metre, second in high jump and third
in triple jump.
In the Senior Girls division, Julie-
Anne Staehli lowered her own mark
in the 400-metre hurdles by two
seconds. Teammate Madeline
Yungblut, running a gruelling 3,000-
metre, broke a 31-year-old record
held by Janet Wood (10:50.2) going
the distance in 10:49.77.
The Junior Girls 4x100-metre
relay team of Leah Hutchison, Sarah
Cook, Kira Worner and Lanie Smith
blazed the way to the finish line to
clinch gold in an exciting finish.
Midget Girls Brianna Bird broke
two records in long-distance races.
In the 1,500-metre race, a record
she broke a week ago at the
conference meet, Bird continued to
lower the mark to 5:10.12 breaking
the record of 5:18.6 previously held
by Janet Wood, who achieved the
time in 1977.
Bird shattered yet another school
record in the 3,000-metre running
the race in 11:26.46 (the previous
record of 12:12 was set by Tasha
Mayer in 1993).
The top four competitors in each
OFSAA West Regional event will
qualify for the coveted final level
Ontario Provincial championships
(OFSAA) to be held in Sudbury
June 2-4.
