Members of Huron East Against Turbines (HEAT) came to Huron East Council on May 17 with concerns about a public meeting on the St. Columban wind turbine project set to take place on May 26. HEAT co-founder Rob Tetu said that public meetings organized by wind turbine development companies are often not very conducive to public consultation. He likened it to a community being told what’s going to happen with a wind turbine project, not a company asking the community what it would like to see in a wind turbine project. Tetu and fellow HEAT co-founder Gerry Ryan proposed that perhaps council could set up a public meeting between the two sides (the developers and HEAT, as well as community members) and whereHEAT’s questions could beanswered. Tetu said that while there will be a forum for questions at the May 26 meeting, often proponents of wind energy answer questions with stock answers that come right out of the Green Energy Act. Some councillors were skeptical, however, saying that they were unsure if the two sides would be able to have a civilized meeting where the two sides could reach a common ground. Members of HEAT insisted that such a meeting could take place, but councillors remained skeptical. Councillor Andy Flowers said that a meeting between the two sides could very well end with both sides “going home angry” and the meeting will have served no purpose. Ryan disagreed, saying “I think if we had a meeting in public, thatwould be acceptable to [HEAT]”.Ryan also felt that council should have the same concerns as the members of HEAT going into this meeting on May 26 and the subsequent meeting to be set up by council (should council agree to setting up such a meeting). “You should be asking these same questions,” Ryan said, “rather than just facilitating a meeting.” Members of HEAT were very clear with what they hoped to achieve with the meeting, but councillors said that what they want is governed by the Green Energy Act and there’s little that can be done at the municipal level. “We want greater setbacks. We want to be protected,” Ryan said. Mayor Bernie MacLellan said the only way such a meeting would work was if it was a “meeting of equals” which it won’t feel like, unfortunately.“It needs to be a meeting of equals, but it’s not really going to be a meeting of equals,” MacLellan said. “This is David going up against Goliath.” Another possibility was raised by councillors, who said that perhaps if questions were submitted to the wind turbine company represen- tatives in advance, then they wouldagree to have another meeting.Council took no official stance on whether a meeting would be organized or not. Councillors simply said that no meeting could take place until after the May 26 meeting and the members of HEAT agreed, saying they would want time to prepare for such a meeting anyway.
