The Citizen, 2011-05-26, Page 15THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, MAY 26, 2011. PAGE 15. Huron East councillors have found a solution to their clerk- administrator issue and it (he) was right in front of them. Current treasurer Brad Knight will be taking over for long-time clerk- administrator Jack McLachlan when McLachlan retires at the end of July. This is the first time Huron East has had to fill the clerk-administrator position, and subsequently, the treasurer position. The decision was officially announced after a closed-to-the- public session of Huron East Council at the end of its May 17 meeting. McLachlan first took the position of clerk in Tuckersmith on July 1, 1977. He remained at that post until Tuckersmith amalgamated with four other townships into Huron East in 2001, at which time he assumed the role of clerk-treasurer for the newly- formed municipality. Around Christmas, McLachlan officially announced that he would be retiring from the position he had held for nearly 10 years. He said he would stay on until the end of June in order to give the municipality ample time to find a replacement. Now that the decision has beenmade, he has agreed to stay on for one more month (which will officially give him a full 10 years at the position) in order to see Knight’s transition through, in addition to the hiring of a new treasurer, as Knight will be vacating the position when taking over as clerk-administrator on August 1. McLachlan said that Knight has a great working knowledge of how things are already being done in Huron East and that his years of working alongside McLachlan have done nothing but help Knight to know the issues Huron East faces even better. “I think he’ll do an excellent job,” McLachlan said. “He knows the issues and he and I have worked side by side for years, so he has the experience and he knows the area.” Knight, who first took the post of clerk-treasurer in Grey Township in 1985, followed a similar path to McLachlan in coming to be employed with Huron East. After serving for over 15 years in Grey Township, Knight was made treasurer for the newly-formed Municipality of Huron East, and has served at that post ever since. He said that going into last year, many of those involved with HuronEast, both staff and councillors, knew that it was only a matter of time until McLachlan made the decision to retire, so Knight says he’d be lying if the thought of applying for the position hadn’t crossed his mind. When McLachlan officially announced that he would begin taking steps towards retirement, Knight said he began taking the application much more seriously. Knight says that when he does take over the position, he doesn’t have any grand plans of change, saying that McLachlan had been doing a great job in running the municipality and he hoped to build on what McLachlan had already accomplished. “I think the municipality is fairly stable and I hope that stability will continue,” Knight said. “I’m not anticipating drastic changes. We’re all happy with the staff we have here.” Huron East Mayor Bernie MacLellan said that while he hoped to not take anything away from any of the other applicants, he wanted to congratulate Knight on being the successful candidate for the position. Huron East had brought in aprofessional consultant to help withthe hiring process and MacLellan said he feels that the consultant helped immensely with the hiring. “It certainly was a long process for the administration committee,” MacLellan said. “It’s not a process that we’re familiar with and it’s not one we want to be familiar with.”MacLellan says that Knight willbe greeted with a tough job as soon as he comes out of the gate in hiring a new treasurer to fill the position that he will be vacating. “This is going to be something that [Knight] is not accustomed to,” MacLellan said.
