Columnist has fond memoriesfrom trip to San Francisco
We’re back and we didn’t leave
our hearts in San Francisco. We
brought them back as well as good
memories. This city known from
several Broadway songs is also a
working city. The fishing industry is
alive and well, so their boats are
there to admire.
The products of the sea are
available in the raw state from Fish
Alley or many of the restaurants
around Fisherman’s Wharf do
wonderful things with the various
kinds of fish. So I was in my dream
world, a different fish dish for a
week.
The call to San Francisco was the
memory of cable cars in a detective
story from my youth.
The hills, the water and the cable
cars just looked so good on
television.
I’m very pleased to say that it was
even better than I anticipated. The
cars are pulled by cable up some
very steep hills by a pulley that runs
at 9.5 miles per hour, so no variation
in speed once they get the cars
going.
The ups and downs of the city
were wonderful to ride and riding
the cable cars is one of the city’s
tourist attractions. Watching the
men move the brake levers and the
release was entertaining, especially
on hills that are at 30 degrees or
more.
The whole city is fun from a
district called Cow Hollow, because
it was the last pasture field in the
booming city, to seeing the stage
coach in the Wells Fargo Bank.
The Golden Gate Bridge is
another wonder for tourists to see,
the cables holding this very long
bridge in place are 38 inches in
diameter, and I’m not sure how
many do that job. The bridge has the
ability to move with the wind, which
can hit 110 miles per hour and so the
bridge has been seen to swing 27
feet. The day we walked over it, was
windy but the bridge didn’t seem to
move.
Like any holiday it’s good to get
away and enjoy what the rest of the
world has to offer, but it also very
good to be home.
We’ve found another place on this
earth that I’d return for a visit any
time.
Lots of learning happened at the
United Church on Thursday
evening. Green decorating tips were
offered by Ten Pas Decor.
Healthy eating and safe food
handling facts were shared
by the Health Unit and I gave a few
tips on First Aid dealing with
children.
Being a church fundraiser we
were treated to angel cake,
strawberries and whipped cream, of
course a healthy snack.
Keep digging out your excess
stuff and make it available to the
world at the yard sales on the
weekend. They’ll be impressed with
your treasures.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

The Brussels Legion Branch was
very quiet this past week with just
regular activities taking place. The
Cadets met on Tuesday evening and
they are getting ready for their year-
end annual inspection. A reminder
that the Corp is still collecting pop
cans and returnable bottles and will
continue to do so all summer. Place
bags behind the Branch for pickup
and mark for Cadets. Monies raised
from the cans and bottles is used for
Corp activities and supplies.
The Brussels Legion Pipe Band
practises on Thursday evening. The
band members are from around the
Brussels area as well as Listowel.
The band encourages anyone who
would be interested in learning the
pipes or the drums to contact Pipe
Major Donald Martin. New
members would really help the band
out. If you have a sense of music,
willing to learn and practise, like the
outdoors and can parade, the
Brussels Legion Pipe Band would
like to hear from you.
