THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, MAY 19, 2011.Duff’s to hold anniversary service There are a lot more happy farmers this past week than before with the run of good weather. My crop advisor, Don, feels that around 90 per cent of the corn in our immediate area is in the ground. The size of the machinery today enables farmers to cover a lot of ground in a day. Farmers who finished their corn have moved right into getting the ground ready for the soybean crop. Lily Fincham has returned from a trip to Verona, New York which is west of Utica. The bus trip was for three days with Great Canadian Tours and they were at the Turning Stone Casino. They enjoyed the casino, shopping in Syracuse, spas, golf and the great restaurants that were available. Lily reports it was a nice getaway for a few days. Seaforth Hospital is a “popular” place and has a few of our Walton residents as patients. Howard Hackwell and Doreen Hackwell are still recovering there and Ed McClure has been transferred from London and is resting comfortably there. An update on Craig Somerville is that he is now back in Stratford Hospital after spending some time at Parkwood Hospital in London. Gloria Wilbee recently had surgery on her hand in Stratford and is home recovering. Olene Dennis has had surgery Kitchener and is also home recovering. We wish them both the best in the recuperation. Jim Alton is home from hospital and is doing well. Friends of Margery Huether gathered to help her celebrate her 75th birthday a week or so ago. The friends came from Brussels, Walton, Listowel, Wingham and Stratford. The 16 ladies gathered at Cinnamon Jim’s for lunch and then went to the home of Dona Knight to enjoy birthday cake and ice cream and a pleasant afternoon. Howard and Joan Bernard were lucky on Mother’s Day weekend that they have neighbours with good ears. They had left the house for a while and the neighbours could hear the smoke detectors ringing. The neighbours contacted family members and they found the house filled with smoke. Luckily, there was no fire started, but a lot of smoke damage from a tea kettle boiling dry. The Bernards have had to stay elsewhere while restoration crews are cleaning the house. Joan says, this is not the way she intended to get her spring cleaning done, but they are very thankful for good neighbours and working smoke detectors. A reminder for everyone to check the batteries of yours today. Birthdays are special, but extra special when the birthday girl is 100. Marie McTaggart celebrated her 100th birthday on May 18. There were nearly 50 neighbours, family and friends on hand to enjoy the evening. Jane Zwep introduced and welcomed Sarah, her mother, Linda McDonald and the groom’s mother Hilda Young and everyone to the evening. She read the Alphabet Address to start the program. A musical skit/song, “Take Me Out to the Wedding”, was presented by Jo-Ann McDonald and Patty Banks with Marion Godkin at the piano. Alicia McDonald read the address for Sarah and the many beautiful gifts were presented and opened by Sarah, Linda and Hilda. Sarah thanked everyone for their generous gifts and for attending. The groupof seven ladies that includes Sandra Machan, Sara Overholt, Kelly Marshall, Sue Overholt, Gail McArter, MaryAnn Bernard and Janis Bray have invited three professional ladies to share their talents/training at an information night. This group of ladies have come up with a great idea for their Power of Ten and feel it will be a great evening, thisThursday night. Look for details inthe coming events of the paper.
