Madill athletes to move on to WOSSAAAthletes from F.E. Madill provedthey’ve got the goods at the Huron-Perth Track and Field
Championships held on May 10 and
11 with nearly 90 per cent of their
team continuing on to the Western
Ontario Secondary School Athletic
Association (WOSSAA) track and
field competition held May 19 and
20 in London.
The Madill track and field team
enjoyed the best weather conditions
so far this season as they competed
at the Huron-Perth championships
held at St. Anne’s Catholic
Secondary School in Clinton.
Fifty-eight athletes from Madill
put forth a great team effort over the
two-day meet. A record 77 ‘personal
bests’ were achieved with 51 of the
58 athletes advancing to WOSSAA.
Continuing a winning track and
field tradition at Madill, the team
claimed the Huron-Perth
Championship with a convincing
811 point total, over 400 points
ahead of its closest rival. The team
also won five of the six divisions,
overall girls, and overall boys.
Madill athletes set seven new Huron-
Perth and school records and had
three individual champions in their
ranks. In the exciting 4x100-metre
relay events, a record 10 of the
Madill 4x100-metre relay teams
advanced to WOSSAA.
The Senior Girls collected a large
number of team points in winning
their division. Gina Murray hurled
the javelin 40.58 metres to break the
existing Senior Girls meet record
and become the first girl in the
school to break the 40-metre barrier.
Julie-Anne Staehli ran smoothly
over the steeplechase barriers to set a
new school record. She also won the
400-metre race and 400-metre
hurdles and received a trophy as
individual girls champion. Kayla
Smith led the pack sprinting down
the 100-metre stretch. In the Senior
long jump event she leaped 4.59
metres to clinch a second win.
The Midget Girls division was
also strong for Madill. Brianna Bird,
competing in her first Huron-Perth
as a Midget broke a 34-year-old
school record held by Janet Wood
running the 1,500-metre distance in
5:17.16. She continued her record-breaking ways in the 3,000-metreslashing the old record set by Tasha
Mayer 18 years ago by 14 seconds.
Marion Studhalter proved her
versatility winning the 400-metre
and also the discus event. Teammate
Holly Howson won the Midget Girls
80-metre hurdles and then leaped
9.03 metres in triple jump to claim
second in that event. Of the 11
Midget Girls on the team, all
contributed to their division
championship.
Senior Boys, who also won their
division, had several returning
experienced athletes. Ben
Dailleboust won all three of his
events-sprint hurdles, distance
hurdles and 400-metre race to win
the Senior Boys Individual
Championship. In 400-metre hurdles
he set a new Huron-Perth record
covering the distance in 56.25
seconds. The Madill boys were a
force to be reckoned with in the
jumping pits with Cole Pellett,
Michael Ballagh, Brayden Pellett,
and Joe Bell earning placings in the
top six in both triple and long jump.
Tyler Smith narrowly missed the
meet record in high jump when he
won the event with a leap of 1.90
metres. In the 4x100-metre relay,
Brayden Pellett, Michael Ballagh,
Cole Pellett, and Ben Dailleboust
connected smoothly on their
exchanges as they out sprinted the
opposition to set a new Huron-Perth
record of 44.32 seconds.
The Junior Boys, also division
winners, were a well balanced team
earning points in running, jumping
and throwing. Luke Dailleboust led
the way with three first place
finishes in 100-metre hurdles, 200-
metre hurdles and long jump.
Dailleboust’s time of 13.69 in the
hurdles set a new Huron-Perth and
school record. In the high jump,
Adam Cousins soared over the bar at
1.70 metres to win the event. His
throw of 38.43 metres in discus was
also a personal best that earned him
second place. The Junior 4x100-
metre relay team (Jesse Fortier,
Tyrell Smith, Garrett Davidson,
Luke Dailleboust) also set a
fast pace winning the race in
48.32 seconds.
In Midget Boys, Alex Peters
blazed down the 100-metre stretch in
a record 11.41 seconds to set a new
Huron-Perth and school record. The
old school record, set in 1997, was
held by Josh Sparks. Peters also won
the high jump (1.68 metres)
breaking the Huron-Perth record in
that event.
The Junior girls was also a strong
division. They had several
contributers in winning the team
title. Leah Hutchison narrowly
missed the record in high jump
winning the event with 1.57 metres.
She also won triple jump (10.53
metres) and was second in 80-metre
hurdles. Teammate Sara Cook added
a first in 300-metre hurdles, a second
in javelin, and a third in sprint
hurdles. Again, the Junior A and B
relay teams performed well winning
first and third overall, respectively,
in an exciting race.
After a successful Huron-Perth
meet, the team now gears up for the
WOSSA competition on May 19 and
20 at TD Waterhouse Stadium at the
University of Western Ontario in
London.
Clearing the hurdles
Brianne Oldridge, left, and Ashlie French clear the hurdles in Midget Girls 80-metre hurdle
race at the Huron-Perth Track and Field Championships held at St. Anne’s Catholic Secondary
School on May 10. Oldridge and French were among 58 members of the F.E. Madill Secondary
School track and field team, of whom 51 members are continuing on to the WOSSAA track
and field championships in London on May 19 and 20. (submitted photo)
