Chip and a Putt – By Bruce Skinn
The Wingham Golf and Curling
Club enjoyed a busy week despite
Mother Nature again show her
strength. On Tuesday, May 10 the
ladies held their opening golf and
supper. The ladies came up with
many ideas on having specialty
nights and this should be a fantastic
year for the gals.
The Wednesday morning seniors
had 20 golfers hit to the links. Doug
Neil’s two birdies led him to low-net
winner with Bob Foxton, second
and Grant Currie, third. Doug
Vanderwoude sank the longest putt
while new member Don Bone shot a
fine 39 to take low-gross score.
The Thursday night men again
had a perfect night for golfing. The
48 guys took advantage of the great
conditions and beautiful weather.
Tim Hayes won the closest to the pin
with Trevor Hopf and John Dybes
sinking the longest putts. The
hidden score winners were Steve
Huffman, Ken Saxton and Steve
Nixon. Tom Robinson won for most
honest golfer. Hayes fired a 38 for
low score followed closely by Hopf
and Doug Neil.
On Sunday the club held a very
successful spring barbecue with
over 500 hungry golfers, curlers and
guests. Jeff Cardiff again did a great
job with the meat. Barbecue
chairperson Mary Houghton did a
fantastic job organizing this big
fundraising event for the club.
Special thanks to all the volunteers.
OUT OF BOUNDS
The rain took over most of the
weekend again and superintendents
and golf course managers are
starting to understand better why the
local farmers talk so much about the
weather conditions. After the great
spring last year, this has been a
complete turnaround, but compared
to our Manitoba neighbours, things
could be a whole lot worse.
