Prior to the tea party, Mikayla received the absolute princess treatment, having her hair and make- up done, getting dressed in the highest of princess fashion and having pictures taken. Then, at the tea party, Mikayla was brought in with Katie and a handful of the Disney princesses as Mikayla was able to be a princess in a red dress alongside her mother before sitting down for tea and snacks. Tears were shed when the news was broken to Mikayla that it was time for the family to head back to Blyth, one of the many moments that were captured on video. So on the evening of May 4, volunteers from The Sunshine Foundation made their way to Blyth to follow up with the Ansleys and wrap up Mikayla’s princess experience with cupcakes, presents and a visit from the Sunshine Bear. The Sunshine Foundation was created in 1987 by a Canadianpolice officer who lost his teenageson to Muscular Dystrophy. Since itsinception, the organization hasgranted nearly 7,000 dreams for children who are challenged with several physical disabilities or life- threatening illnesses. Stratford-Huron-Perth Dream Co- ordinator Donna Huitema and volunteers Lindsay McNichol and Alexa Groenestege arrived at the Ansleys’ home to meet Mikayla, who was wearing her red princess dress and waiting for her special guests. Together they all watched videos from the trip and flipped through photo albums while Mikayla cuddled with the Sunshine Bear, showering him with hugs, kisses and even a bit of tickling. The most important gift that was given throughout the whole experience though, Katie said, was to see Mikayla have a week that was all about her, where she didn’t have to experience pain or go through treatments or procedures. “I thank Mikayla every day for teaching me the secret to life,” saysKatie. “She is a shining four-year-old little girl who has not let cancer, chemotherapy, cryotherapy, lasertherapy, surgery, blood infection or vision loss take away from her passion for life. “Mikayla wakes up every day with a smile and before she goes to bed, she says ‘I love you mommy. Sweet Dreams.’” Diagnosed before her first birthday, Mikayla’s condition was confirmed at the end of January, 2008. Initially, Katie had noticed a white patch on the pupil of Mikayla’s eye in photographs and after a trip to a specialist at the University of Waterloo, suspicions were heightened. And in a trip to Sick Kids Hospital, later that day, Mikayla’s condition was confirmed. It was found that Mikayla had cancerous tumours in both of her eyes, with her left eye being the worse of the two, the eye that was initially not a concern for Katie. Days later Mikayla began an aggressive treatment program of A spot of tea Mikayla Ansley, left, and her mother Katie were the guests of honour at a Disneyland tea party in March thanks to The Sunshine Foundation.
