Ontario Swine Improvement (OSI) presented Bob Robinson of Vista Villa Farms with the award of excellence on April 6. This award is presented annually to the Ontario breeder who has shown excellent genetic improvement (using the Canadian Centre for Swine Improvement (CCSI) national testing program) over the past 12 months. Utilizing the national testing program has allowed Vista Villa to continue improvement in backfat levels, growth rate and estimated lean yield and, more recently, maternal traits. Each year Vista Villa tests approximately 2,000 purebred Yorkshire or Landrace gilts on the CCSI programme. Over 10 years the economic improvement for his customers would total $149 per sow annually, the largest portion of this being the improvement in number born of 1.16 pigs. Robinson’s philosophy has always focused on animals that had to be functional sound, and have rugged, big bodies with a good underline. This combination has allowed Vista Villa to become the largest independent breeder in animal sales in Ontario. Vista Villa has 2,500 sows at the home farm, 700 sows at Denfield and 500 at Jarvis. “Bob has been a leader in the swine industry for many years now both through genetic improvement and his industry involvement and I am pleased that his sons are continuing in his footsteps. I would like to congratulate Bob and the entire Robinson family, and thank them for their hard work and contribution to the swine industry,” said Dave Vandenbroek, General Manager of OSI. Ontario Swine Improvement is an industry-run organization dedicated to providing swine improvement and genetic products, programs, information and expertise.
