Trailing 4-1 in the fifth inning, the Barons rallied in the fifth and sixth innings to score a 7-4 decision over the Stratford team. Shawn Bromley paced the offence with a pair of run-scoring triples. Mike Kerr rapped out a pair of singles, with Ryan Clancy and Chris Stewart each getting a single. Scott Bromley started on the mound for the Barons and was relieved by Adam Cronin. Kirk Stewart finished up on the mound. Catcher Shawn Bromley said it was a very good win for the first game of the year. “We got everybody into the lineup,” he said. He noted that the Barons received some timely hitting to record the victory. Next game for the Barons is Friday when they host the Walton Brewers, beginning at 7:30 p.m. On Sunday, the Barons travel to Stratford for a return match against the Memorials. Game time is 5 p.m. The Walton Brewers play a home game on Tuesday, when they host the Brussels Tigers beginning at 8 p.m. By Jim Brown The Citizen St. Columban trumps Blyth The Blyth U14 girls hosted St. Columban on May 5 but were unable to defeat the visiting team. St. Columban pulled a 4- 1 win over Blyth. (Vicky Bremner photo) Continued from page 9 in it, rather than the Brussels machine, which has little-to-no value left in it. Deputy-Mayor Joe Steffler said that buying these machines new should be the only option and that the refurbishing option for over $50,000 that Corbett had presented would be a very expensive “band-aid fix”. Brussels Councillor Joe Seili agreed, saying that from a business standpoint, spending several thousand dollars every year on the machine would total $100,000 over 20 years, so it just makes more sense to buy new machines at this point. Steffler was in favour of tendering for two machines, thinking that a good deal would be hard to turn down, even if it meant purchasing two machines this year. “If we have a chance to make a good deal, why not go for it?” he said. If there were still questions that remained unanswered, Mayor Bernie MacLellan encouraged councillors to take their time with the decision. He said that if the decision waited for two, or even four more weeks, it wouldn’t hold the process up too much, but councillors ended up feeling prepared to make a decision at the time. Seaforth resurfacer nearing end Don’t call it a comeback... After trailing 4-1 in the fifth inning, the Blyth Barons mounted a late-game rally to beat the Stratford Memorials 7-4. (Jim Brown photo) The Wingham Golf and Curling Club welcomed some sunshine this past week and some of the league play was able to finally get started. On Wednesday, May 4 despite cool temperatures and the persistent east wind, 13 senior men took part in their weekly golf morning. Bob Johnston took low net honours, with our young gun Clayton Ruppel coming in second and Doug Barfoot finishing third. Johnston also was low gross followed by Doug Vanderwoude and Wayne Gordon. The Thursday night men had a fantastic first week turnout with 42 eager golfers taking to the links. Joe O’Rourke won closest to the pin with Brian Skinn sinking the longest putt. Hidden score winners were Bob Johnston, Doug (Shorty) Long, Adam McDonald and Doug Rathwell. Jay Marston fired a super round of 36 followed by Don Edgar’s 37. The Friday night wing night was also a huge success despite the weatherman putting a damper on the golfing. Close to 50 hungry chicken lovers enjoyed the large tasty wings and this was a great sign for our monthly wing nights. On Saturday, the club hosted a 50th birthday party for Murray Fear. Around 100 family and friends got together to tell some stories, share some laughs and most of all enjoy each other’s company. OUT OF BOUNDS NEWS This Sunday, May 15 the club is having its spring ham and beef barbecue from 5 - 7 p.m. Anyone needing tickets can call the pro shop at 519-357-2179.
