Huron County’s 2011 Man of
Integrity award ceremony was held
on May 5 at the Bedford Hotel in
Goderich. A program devised by the
Domestic Assault Review Team of
Huron County, this award is
presented to a candidate who has
been nominated for assisting a
woman at risk or for promoting
gender equality.
Project co-ordinator Jeff Sabin, a
retired officer from the Huron
County OPP presented the 2011
Man of Integrity award to Phil
LaPorte of St. Joseph’s, father of
Auburn resident Jacqui Laporte.
Phil was nominated by his former
coworkers from the Ontario Clean
Water Agency for being a
community role model who
advocated for gender equality and
demonstrated principles of
integrity – honesty, truthfulness,
compassion, and strength.
Congratulations to Phil – Jacqui is
very proud!
The Auburn Village-Wide YardSale was an amazing success lastSaturday.
The great weather prompted
people from all over to crowd the
streets looking for deals. The
Playground Committee’s bake sale
was sold out by noon and the
committee took in $350.50. Many
thanks go to all of the baking
donors, namely Shirley Andrews,
Stephanie Ohm, Koreen Moss,
Dorothy Schneider, Erma
Cartwright, Gerry Upthegrove,
Cynthia Baechler, Laura Beacom,
Suzanne MacVicar, Marcia
Bakelaar, Marg Anderson, Juanita
Hamp and Beth Blowes. This
fundraising project has definitely
become a community effort.
Just a reminder to everyone with
little ones that the “Spring Fling”
event hosted by the Auburn
Playground Committee will be this
coming Saturday, May 14 from
6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Auburn

Medical incentives necessary
Inspired by a letter from the town
of Ingersoll, members of Ashfield-
Colborne-Wawanosh (ACW)
Township Council debated the future
of rural medicine during their May 3
meeting.
The letter calls for incentives
given by municipalities to attract
medical personnel to their area to be
discontinued.
Ingersoll’s council calls on the
provincial government to make it its
mandate to attract and retain health
care professionals “in a fair and
equitable manner without cost to
municipalities”.
Council was wary of the idea, as it
seemed good, but Reeve Ben Van
Diepenbeek pointed out that
Ingersoll is far closer to a major
hospital than ACW, or any
surrounding municipalities for that
matter.
“In small, rural areas you might
not get a doctor if you don’t hang the
carrot in front of them,” he said.
“Ingersoll is close enough to London
that they can go there and strike a
deal with them, but we don’t have
that luxury.”
Other councillors stated that, even
if they eliminated the incentives,
municipalities would find other
means of attracting doctors when it
came time to fill a position.
“It would be very hard to eliminate
incentives,” councillor Doug Miller
said. “Municipalities will always
find another mechanism to bring
doctors to them.”
Councillor Roger Watt stated that,
while the idea seemed good, it
wouldn’t benefit ACW in the long
run.
“It’s good to level the playing field
usually,” he said. “But this may end
up driving doctors away from us if
we can’t give them a reason to come
here.”
Council decided to receive and file
the letter, but not pursue any action.

ACW to get
entry signs
ACW Township Council decided
to pursue having signs similar to the
Huron County Tourism’s Welcome
to Ontario’s West Coast signs
erected to welcome tourists to
ACW.
If ACW purchased the signs
through Huron County, the cost per
sign would be approximately $800,
and that the county would install
the signs since most would be
placed on county roads.
Eight signs are expected to be
erected after a final price and
design is approved by council.
ACW to support playground
Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh
(ACW) Township Council decided
it would contribute to the cost of
new equipment for the Auburn
playground during their May 3
meeting.
An exact dollar amount will be
determined after the result of a
Trillium Grant application that had
been filed by Central Huron for the
same project.
