A meal for mamas
Yvonne Knight, left, serves up some salad for Margery Huether during the annual Mother’s
Day luncheon held at Huronlea Home for the Aged. Mothers, husbands, daughters and sons
crowded into the dining room at Huronlea to enjoy lunch and a bake sale on Friday, May 6.

At the BranchLast dinner until fall By Jo-Ann McDonaldActivities around the BrusselsLegion Branch all involve food this
week. The Friday night supper of
pork chops and meatballs had a
small crowd attending. This week
will be roast beef. It will also be the
last Friday night supper until the fall.
The Branch has many other catering
functions and fish fry events to work,
and the help can only be worked so
hard. We appreciate all who come
out to support the suppers and we
hope to see everyone in the fall.
The Mother’s Day meal was well
attended with nearly 100 folks
enjoying the great meal. The room
was beautiful with white tablecloths
and flowers on the tables.
The salad bar dishes were
prepared by Comrades Deb Cann,
Sandra Josling and Lisa Glanville
with the main meal was prepared by
Comrades Jo-Ann McDonald, Deb,
Mary Bradshaw and Judy Lee.
Adding a little relief, by helping with
the dishes, were Comrades Don and
Dale Chesher and Nanci Ducharme.
It was a nice day and thanks for
coming out and supporting the
Branch.
Comrade President John Lowe
was in Sault Ste. Marie attending the
Provincial Convention on theweekend. We will have a full reportin the next issue.
Comrades interested in Zone Golf
will need to know it is June 4 and
sign-up is soon. Let Sports Officer
Rick McDonald know or call the
Branch for details. The event is in
Seaforth.
NEWS
FROM BRUSSELS
The spring bulbs are having a
good time, just enough warmth to
get out but not enough heat to
shorten their life span. Every day is
a new sight as the different varieties
pop. The various shades of green on
the landscape always cause me to
ponder the details involved in life.
Mother’s Day is past and I’m
hoping you connected with your
offspring. Time schedules, distance
and activities can take a little
planning to make the contact, but it’s
another way of cementing the
known fact that you share love with
another and that’s what counts in
this world.
I often wonder who plans the
“named weeks” that are proclaimed
for the world to note, but it caused
me to smile as I realized that Mental
Health Week and Emergency
Preparedness Week both ended on
Mother’s day. Now was that a very
sharp person who clearly saw the
connection or was divine
intervention involved? If you think
about it it’s a very sensible
combination.
Mental illness is still a stigma. We
can talk about death, sex and taxes
but we still cringe when addictions,
suicide and mental balance issues
surface. We laugh, we go silent, we
get angry but rarely can we just
listen with empathy and share
concern. We still judge, we blame,
we make excuses and we condemn.
It’s time we accept the fact that the
brain is a large part of who we are
and at times it and the body that
surrounds it, may just need
assurance, education, acceptance
and love. We have these to offer. We
need to get out of the 1950s and see
that the whole body, the whole
person needs help. Perhaps that’s
why Mother’s Day ends mental
health week; for mothers love us, no
matter what.
Huronlea Auxiliary had a good
crowd sharing lunch last Friday to
celebrate the friendship they bring to
the residents and the mothers in the
midst.
Andrew Watson shared his
pictures and experiences from his
2010 Lion’s International visit to
Turkey. The United Church Women
invited Andrew and other guests to
their May meeting where good food,
conversation and the Lions
experience was shared.
It’s time to get some sorting done,
the village garage sale is at the end
of the month and a very good time to
share your treasures and junk.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
