Featuring a water feature

columbar crabapple and pine trees.
Many of these came through friends
and non-commercial channels.
“We were given a lot of maple
trees, so they’ve become a big part
of the yard,” she said. “We got a lot
of our pine and spruce trees from
Earth Day plantings.”
What was given wasn’t always
what was best though, Fortune
found, as she grew her garden into
what she wanted it to be.
“We used what we were given,
then we moved to getting things that
worked better,” she said. “Even if it
meant ripping out things we’ve had
for years.”
The majority of the landscaping at
her home is either homegrown or
home created.
“All the woodwork [including
trellises and a gazebo] is home-
built,” she said. “We haven’t paid for
anything to be done besides
[concrete laying for the driveway].”
Another major part of the
landscaping of Fortune’s yard is her
water feature, a pond with a
waterfall and fountain.
“That was all done by us as well,
with the exception of the larger,
heavier rocks,” she said.
The pond, which was dug out,
lined with sand, covered and filled
by the Fortunes, features lighting
around the edge as well as
submerged lights and two separate
water pumps, one feeding a
waterfall over rocks and one
spraying a fountain in the middle of
the body of water.
The water isn’t a habitat for
wildlife though, according to
Fortune.
“We try to keep animals out of it
for their own sake,” Fortune said,
noting that a frog had once laid eggs
in the water, however, they didn’t
survive due to the lack of nearby
food.
Every spring Doug drains the
pool, scrubs its sides and refills it to
ensure that the water doesn’t breed
unwanted growths.
“It wasn’t difficult to set up the
pond,” Fortune said, stating that the
digging was hard work, but that after
that they were able to find things
easily.
“The fountain head wasn’t hard to
find, and we bought the shale locally
and the big rocks from northern
Ontario,” she said.
