What started as a wheat field
became both home and garden to
Belgrave’s Gerry Fortune and her
husband Doug.
Fortune stumbled into gardening
as something to do around her
newly-built home some years ago
and thanks to the kindness of
friends, she has learned what works
and what doesn’t in a home garden.
“I really started it as something to
do,” she said. “My yard was nothing
more than a wheat field with no
landscaping when we bought it.”
Fortune said that what started with
some grass and a few shrubs quickly
took on a life of its own thanks to the
generosity of others.
“People gave me plants, and I just
started working in the garden,” she
said. “I learned to garden by
creating the space I wanted to. I
have no formal training, I just know
what I like.”
Fortune said that, among the
things she likes, trees, shrubs and
perennials top the list.
Of the perennials, Fortune doesn’t
have particular species of plants, but
does say she likes certain colours.
“I prefer mauves, purples, pinks,
whites, yellows and greens in my
flowers,” she said. “Red wouldn’t
really work with the rusty brown
exterior [of my house].”
As far as trees go, Fortune has
several different species on her
property, including maple, linden,

Splashes of(and) colour
The Fortunes, of Belgrave, turned the wheat field that used to sit where their home does now,
into an oasis of colour, water and flora, and did so with a lot of help from friends. Many of the
plants shown above were gifts or things shared with the Fortunes, and the majority of it was
hand-crafted or hand-planted. (Photo submitted)
