grass’s maintenance.
The process wasn’t always as easy
as it sounds, Smith says, as there
were speed bumps along the way
along with significant frustration
that resulted in several stops and re-
starts on the project.
“I’d get frustrated with it and I’d
stop for a while and then someone
would tell me how good what I had
looked and I’d start it up again,”
Smith said.
During the course’s construction,
Smith says that he used very few
chemicals and that much of the
maintenance that he continues to
conduct on the course is free of
chemicals.
Over five years later the course
was built and opened to the public to
an excellent response, Smith says.
“It’s a great course for anyone
who wants to golf in under an hour,”
Smith says.
While the course has been
successful, Smith says that the
modest $10 play-all-day fee really
does little more than cover his costs,
so when he hears suggestions of
expansion from golfers, he thinks
that improvement should come
before expansion.
“I’m happy with the response I’ve
got, but I think I need to focus on
improving the nine [holes] that are
already there, rather than expanding
to 18,” he said.
Expansion is, however, an option,
as Smith purchased the property
directly behind the existing course a
few years ago for that very
possibility down the road.
“It’s busy in the summer, but until
it’s too busy and the course can’t
accommodate everyone, it seems
like there would be no use [in
expanding],” he said.
Smith says the course and its
lengthy construction is rare because
of the absence of any large course
developers or professional golf
course staff. He says it was a real
community project that has
remained that way over the years.
“There weren’t any big
consultants on this,” he said. “I
designed it and it was really just
friends and family who helped me
along with it.”
Course construction wasn’t without speed bumps

Care creates better trees
With the snow gone and the cold
weather receding, amateur and
professional gardeners and arborists
alike are taking stock of what needs
to be done, and pruning is usually
on that list.
Pruning, the act of cutting away
dead, overgrown portions of a tree
to increase fruit-yield and shape, is
