Mulch a two-fold solution for gardening projects
Rural Voice garden columnist
Rhea Hamilton-Seeger hates pulling
weeds.
The Nile-area writer said that, in
her experience, mulch serves two
purposes, one, it prevents weeds,
which means less weed-pulling for
her, and two, it adds nutrients to the
land to which it is applied.
Mulching is the act of placing
mulch, any number of decaying
plant parts such as bark, leaves or
compost, around plants to prevent
unwanted growth while fostering
new and continuing growth from
desirable plants.
Hamilton-Seeger says that she
uses different types of mulch for
different applications.
She uses mulch made of leaves for
around small plants and flowers, as
it is the easiest on them. Bark chips
and mulch based on it is good for big
plants and with a mixture of
20/20/20 fertilizer, provides exactly
what the plants need to thrive
according to Hamilton-Seeger.
“Mixing compost in with mulch is
also good,” Hamilton-Seeger stated.
“It’s excellent for the soil.
Care needs to be used when

Mulch mulch mulch
Rhea Hamilton-Seeger, a gardening columnist for The
Rural Voice, swears by mulch, not just for its ability to
restore nutrients and nitrogen to soil around plants, but also
for preventing weed growth. Hamilton-Seeger is shown here
