At the annual meeting of the
Huron County Municipal Officers
Councillor Neil Warwick was
appointed as representative to the
Source Water Protection Committee,
replacing former Morris-Turnberry
Councillor Bill Thompson.
Ken Procter greeted worshippersand handed out the service ofworship at Knox United Church onSunday, May 1. Rev. Tom Murraywelcomed the congregation onEaster Two Sunday.
Connie Shiell reported on the
recent ham and scalloped potato
supper and thanked everyone who
helped in any way.
The congregation sang, “The Day
of Resurrection” followed by the call
to worship based on John 2: 19-31
which was read responsively. The
children and youth went to the front
of a time with Rev. Tom Murray
which was based on, “Do You
Believe It or Not?” He demonstrated
with surprise bags and had each
child take one. They all believed
there was something good in the bag,
which there was. If we believe good
things happen.
The senior choir sang a selection
accompanied by Mary-Gwen
Miltenburg on the piano. After the
song of God’s response, “Spirit of
God, Unleashed on Earth” was sung
the children left for Sunday School.
Rev. Tom Murray read from Acts
of the Apostles 2: 14a, 22-32 from
the message and the Easter Gospel
IPeter: 3-9. God’s word to us for
today was entitled, “Heart over Mind
over Body!” Every so often another
great cure-all rises from science,
herbal medicines, or common sense.
For some of us these and other
wonder cures do seem to work
wonders, we feel better, stronger and
healthier. Then just about the time
we’re satisfied with them, a new
study comes out and announces – we
were wrong.
So why did we feel so much
better? One of the biggest medicinal
boosts we can give our bodies is the
belief of our own mind and heart.
The placebo effect, as it is know, can
be as much as 90 per cent effective in
healing. It’s the power of positive
thinking. The power of negative
thinking is just as prevalent and is
“the nocebo effect.” A lot of the
power to heal and the power to hurtis all in our head. Each of us should be transformingplacebo into a verb. Placeboing isusing both mind and heart resourcesto bring about the self-healing ability
within our own bodies. Placebo
transformed into a verb is our
actions, our faith and our powers to
release life. Why is it that we in the
church are so ready to believe
“nocebos”?The nocebo effect encourages usto believe the worst, accept theinevitable, and take all negatives asgenuine truths. Believing can makeyou well – literally. Faith is the way
to health, joy and wholeness. Faith is
the way to heart over mind over
body. Faith is the way to a life that
lives in belief.
The song of spirits’ presence was
“Come, O Spirit, Dwell Among Us.”Joyce Vincent and Joan Vincenttook up the offering which wasdedicated. After the Easter Prayerthe Song of Easter’s Triumph was“This Joyful Eastertide”. The
benediction read responsively and
the sung blessing concluded the
morning worship service.
Mary-Gwen Miltenberg
accompanied all the hymns.

Placebo vs. Nocebo debated at Knox United
Sneaking a snack
Three-year-old A.J. Senicar looked both ways, but it wasn’t before crossing the street. The
precocious young child made a quick dash for the food table before the ham and scalloped
potato dinner at the Belgrave Community Centre hosted by Knox United Church. Senicar
snuck some applesauce during the set up for the dinner. (Denny Scott photo)
