Rain, rain, rain! The story goes
that April showers bring May
flowers, so we should have bountiful
flowerbeds of blooms this
spring.
Farmers are getting antsy to get on
the land. When we look back on last
year, a lot of grain and corn had been
planted by this time. But last yearwas an unusually dry, early spring. Ifit stops raining and folks get on theland in the next week, it won’t bethat bad, according to my new cropadvisor, Don. Let’s hope the weatheris changing from cold and wet towarm and dry.
Our deepest sympathy is extended
to Joyce (McCallum) Hartman on
the loss of her husband Wayne. Our
sympathies are extended to the
Hartman and McCallum families.
Wayne was a well-known
businessman in Bayfield owning
Den-Way Auto Body. Our
condolences to all.
There was a lot of activity around
the former Sholdice house in Walton
on Saturday. Firefighters from
across Huron County were using thehouse for training purposes.Owners, Don and Monique Baan, have allowed the firefighters the useof house. They will use it a fewtimes over the course of the next fewmonths. Firefighters were on hand infull gear practising rescue
techniques from upper floor
windows, using ladders and
dummies, as one practice situation.
They were there for both the
morning and afternoon, breaking for
lunch. Fire trucks from Brussels and
Seaforth were on the scene for the
drills.
The Brussels, Morris and Grey
Community Centre hosted a buck
and doe event for Mark Gillis and
Caitlin Bellamy. There was a good
crowd on hand for the party. Mark is
the son of John and Pat Gillis of
Brussels/Walton and Caitlin is from
Listowel. The couple will wed in
July.
The Blyth arena was the venue for
the buck and doe for Heather Little
and Joe Fraser. A good crowd
attended from the Blyth/Brussels
area to support the couple who will
wed in July. Ted and Marlene Little
and Randy and Lorna Fraser are the
parents.
The Seaforth Agriplex was the
venue for the party for Steve
Carnochan and Christie Warwick. A
large crowd from Seaforth/Bluevale
area supported the event for the
upcoming nuptials in July. The
parents are Brad and Sharon
Carnochan and Glenn and Maryann
Warwick.
Easter Sunday Brunch guests with
Margery Huether in Seaforth were
Neil McDonald, Vancouver; Karin
McDonald Calhoun, Bayfield; Ray
Huether, Stratford; Matthew
Huether, Varna; Kelsy Merner,
Clinton; Steven Huether,
Londesborough and John, Kennedy
and Kaden Huether of Walton.
Kenny Huether and his mother
Kathy have been in Prague, Czech
Republic attending a hockey
tournament with Kenny playing with
a team from the Toronto area. They
flew to Venice and visited some
attractions in Italy and then
Germany, before the tournament
started. They returned home Easter
Monday.
Rev. Charles Swan visited with
Margery Huether when he came
from Toronto to attend the Dena
(Wey) Kale memorial service at
Seaforth Legion and Mary Bryan’s
90th birthday party at Huronlea. He
also attended the dinner at Bluevale
United Church on Saturday evening.
He enjoyed seeing many of the faces
of his former congregations at the
many events.
The Walton Hall hosted a family
luncheon Tuesday at lunch time. They had about 20 members ofMarie Blake’s family enjoy a roastbeef dinner following the committalservice for the late George Blake. They were joined by members of theMcDonald family, who had attendedthe committal service for the late
Leona McDonald, also on Tuesday
morning.
Celebrating birthdays to finish up

Dalton, Marcy McCall MacBain,

Lewington, Joe Steffler, Deborah
Wey. May kicks off with Hayden

The Walton TransCan was
recognized for its tourism impact by
the Huron Tourism Association
(HTA) on April 28.
The HTA awarded founder Chris
Lee and his family the Annual
Tourism Development award for
their contributions to Huron County
tourism for over 40 years.
The track, which has hosted the
TransCan event for the past 20 years,
brings in thousands of riders
annually as well as their families,
friends and fans, and the award
recognizes the growth that kind of
tourism generates.
Former winners of the annual
award include the Huron County
Playhouse and the Blyth Festival.
“It’s great to be recognized outside
of the motocross community,” Lee
said. “The HTA is heavily
populated by municipal councillors
and county staff, and that kind of
recognition in front of that
community is really encouraging.”
Lee said that Jan Hawley,
economic development officer for
Huron East nominated Lee and that
there were approximately 12 others
vying for the spot.
“There was no shortage of
competition here, it wasn’t like we
were defaulted the award,” he said.
“That kind of competition makes the
award really great.”
The award was presented at the
HTA’s annual brochure swap which
is held in a different location every
year, and was held in Seaforth this
year.
