The church was levelled at the beginning of April, with a marker being left to commemorate the location where Nile and area church-goers congregated for 156 years. (Denny Scott photo) ACW discusses snow removal at dangerous intersection Graham Denman, a spokesman for residents of Meneset Retirement Community and the surrounding area, addressed Ashfield-Colborne- Wawanosh (ACW) Council about one of its busiest intersections; Highway 21 and Airport Road/MTO Road, just north of Saltford. Denman stated that, due to the surrounding area, that intersection accumulates snow more quickly than other areas and could quickly become a problem for emergency and service vehicles. In Denman’s correspondence were plans to dig out portions of the land around the road to provide a plateau for snow to collect on and be plowed into to prevent dangerous driving conditions. Council agreed that something needed to be done, and stated they would attempt to set up a meeting with the Airport Authority, Goderich Town Council and the Ministry of Transportation to discuss the restructuring. Continued from page 20which was built at the corner ofLucknow Line and Hawkins Road, one concession north of Nile in 1855. Just over 10 years later, construction began on a small, white, one-storey church at the current location of Nile United Church. The church was finished in 1869 after three years of construction. The congregation quickly outgrew this new church though, and, just over 30 years later in 1903, beganconstruction of a new church on thesame location. That church is theone that was torn down this month. The demolition of the church was unique as several parts of the church required an engineer on site. It was discovered that several items, now most likely considered antiquities, were buried underneath a cornerstone as a time capsule. Included in the church’s time capsule are financial statements, lists of members, copies of programs and books from 1903.Several artifacts from the churchwill be viewable at other locationsincluding a cross that Nile Church was given by Port Albert United Church when it closed. The cross will return to Port Albert and be housed at Trinity Church there. The Royal Canadian Legion in Goderich will be housing the memorial plaques which list those who served their country from the area in the first and second World Wars.
