HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2011-04-28, Page 23THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, APRIL 28, 2011. PAGE 23. Continued from page 12think this should apply to all areas ofbusiness including farming. Nowobviously farming is more
important, in that farmers produce
our food that the rest of us use to
stay alive, so it becomes the most
important part of our daily lives.
I don’t believe farmers should
hold us hostage, but do believe they
deserve a level of respect, and also a
reasonable level of return on their
investment.
I have never been a farmer, so
would need direction from the farm
organizations on how to best achieve
this.
6. Where do you stand on retention
or abolition of the Long Gun
Registry?
BL: Our government has strongly
and consistently opposed the Long
Gun Registry.
I believe that it unfairly targets
farmers and hunters. It is evident that
the root causes of crime are not a
result of the weapons an individual
may possess, but they are the direct
result of the hand that pulls the
trigger.
Statistically, when firearms are
used in a violent crime, 71.2 per cent
involved handguns, only nine per
cent (2.1 per cent of which were
registered) involve rifles or
shotguns, and six per cent were
sawed off rifles or shotguns (which
are already prohibited).
Public safety is a priority of this
government. Our commitment to
combat gun crimes remains strongas we have introduced mandatoryprison sentences for those whocommit gun-related crimes.
I believe that Canadians would
rather see their tax dollars keeping
guns out of the hands of criminals
and gangs, instead of trying to
control law-abiding citizens.
On May 15, 2009, Portage-Lisgar
MP Candace Hoeppner introduced
Bill C-391. The goal of Bill C-391
was to amend the Firearms Act to
eliminate the Long Gun Registry,
while maintaining the requirement
for individuals to register prohibited
and restricted firearms, such as
handguns. Unfortunately the
opposition parties did not support
this bill.
If re-elected, a majority
Conservative government will end
the Long Gun Registry once and for
all.
CB: The Liberal government is
promoting retention of the Long
Gun Registry with three main
components.
There is no criminal charge for
first offense, no renewal required
and a simplified on line form that
will make the process user friendly.
The main reason for support is the
overwhelming testimony from
police agencies across the country.
They need this registry for their
protection. By scrapping it, we
would be putting our officers in
jeopardy.
However I would endeavour to
hold several town hall meetings tohear all sides and make a decisionbased on what the majority ofHuron-Bruce residents support. My
vote would reflect the will of the
people I represent as should be the
case in a democracy.
GR: I have always questioned the
long gun registry. But here’s what I
worry about. If we abolish the
registry tomorrow, something bad
will happen and it will in today’s
world. When that happens, there
will be enormous pressure to do
something and we will end up with
something 10 times worse than what
we currently have.
There are legitimate concerns we
farmers and hunters have raised
about the registry. At the same time
the police, including personal
friends, tell me that there are parts of
it that make their job a little bit safer.
It is not perfect, but it is a useful
tool.
Along with some other rural NDP
MPs, I believe there are ways to fix
the registry so that it gets rid of the
legitimate problems we raise, like
criminalizing someone for failing to
register a gun they might have
inherited from a grandfather fast
enough. We should be able to deal
with those issues, while keeping the
parts that help the police. I believe it
is worth an attempt to finally put this
issue to rest and to move on to steps
to make our communities safer.
We wasted an incredible amount
of money setting up the registry, but
that money is already spent, we can’tget it back. Right now it costs abouta dime for every Canadian to run theregistry. I’m prepared to throw in my
dime even on the off chance it gets a
police officer home to family at the
end of their shift. I believe most of
us think the safety of those who
work so hard to keep us safe is worth
a dime.
Let’s be honest, if Stephen Harper
really wanted to scrap the registry he
could have at any time in the last five
years. Yet he never made the attempt.
There was never a government bill to
scrap the registry; there was never
anything in any budget over the last
five years to scrap the registry. The
only attempt that was ever made was
through a private member’s bill.
Scrapping the registry is only
something the Conservatives talk
about to get people to vote and
donate money to them. They are in
no hurry to scrap this golden
fundraising goose.
For the sake of our police and the
legitimate concerns of farmers and
hunters, it is worth the attempt to try
to get rid of this issue forever. To try
to get rid of the things that
legitimately bother farmers and
hunters.
If after that attempt it cannot be
fixed, then I will vote to scrap the
registry. And Jack Layton is the only
leader who has given his MPs the
freedom to do what they think is
right on this issue. That’s the kind of
leadership we need in Ottawa.
ES: The Long Gun Registry is animportant tool in the toolkit used bylaw enforcement; however, it hasunfairly punished some long gun
owners.
The Green Party would look to
simplify and decriminalize the
registry for responsible gun owners;
ban handguns, and other weapons,
that have been designed as people-
killers; make it a criminal offence to
smuggle weapons across the border
instead of a customs violation; and
ensure that the marking of weapons,
which Canada is obligated to do
through its international
commitments to firearms trafficking
protocols, is enforced.
DV : I believe the Long Gun
Registry to be a waste of money and
should be abolished.
7. If elected, what would your
government do to help Canada
become more energy efficient and
environmentally friendly?
BL: We have delivered landmark
investments to boost Canada’s clean
energy sector, strengthen Canada’s
record on conservation and deliver
good Canadian jobs for today and in
the future. Canada is already an
environmentally-friendly energy
producer with over 75 per cent of
our energy being non-emitting
compared to United States with only
25 per cent.
Our government has a strong
record of protecting the environment
and supporting clean energy projects
