The federal election on May 2 is
fast approaching. Two weeks from
now the results will be in. As
always, I encourage you to get out
and vote. Show you are grateful for
the opportunity to elect a
representative of your choice in your
own riding at least. He will be your
voice in Ottawa.
By now you will, hopefully, have
received your voter card in the mail.
Read that card carefully and be sure
to take it to the polls with you. It is
up to every individual voter to be
sure he/she is on the voter’s list. So
if you have not received a voter’s
card you can either call Elections
Canada at 1-866-239-2830 by April
26 or drop in at an advance poll. The
advance polls are not as busy as
election day polls and your
registration will go much faster.
Also if the information on your card
contains errors follow the above two
suggestions to get it corrected.
The Londesborough Lions Club
have now fed you breakfast and are
asking you back for dinner. They
will hold a fish fry at the
Community Hall on April 30.
Tickets are available from a Lions
member or at the Londesborough
post office.
Then next Saturday, the Saturday
of Mother’s Day weekend, the
Londesborough United Church
invites you back to the
Londesborough Community Hall for
their spring supper from 5 to 7 p.m.

Folk music and spirituals filled the
sanctuary of Clinton United Church
on Sunday, April 3 as the Blyth
Festival Singers presented their
spring concert, “Jubilee”. As
director, Robert Blackwell
explained, African heritage music
influenced spirituals, blues, gospel
and jazz music. The concert was
intended to be a celebration of that
music.
The choir itself set the mood of
the concert with folk songs from
Jamaica and Africa. For these folk
songs Chris Adair of Stratford added
drum accompaniment. “Ride Up in
the Chariot” featured the men of the
choir. In the second half of the
afternoon the choir offered
American spirituals and ended with
“When the Saints Go Marchin’ In”.
Sharon Johnston is accompanist for
the choir.
Guest soloist, world - renowned
folk, jazz and spiritual singer,
Denise Pelley, of London, brought
the capacity audience to their feet
more than once with her beautiful
voice. Her unaccompanied number,
“Deep River”, was dedicated to the
children of Sudan. Denise travels to
the Sudan every January to assist
with an art and music camp for
children.
Two John Rutter arrangements,
“Steal Away’ and “Ev’ry Time I Feel
the Spirit” were duets of a
sort featuring the choir and
Denise.
It was a fun concert for the choir
members who appreciated the
opportunity to sing with Denise.
Judging by the responses of the
audience they, too, were enjoying
the experience and the unique
music.
I believe it was one of our more
memorable concerts. The tunes are
still running through our minds a
week later. We’ve sung in Latin and
French in previous concerts. But this
was our first attempt at African and
Jamaican dialect. And we even
danced a bit!

What a performance
World-renowned artist Denise Pelley of London was part of the Blyth Festival Singers’ “Jubilee”
concert at Clinton United Church on April 3. The concert featured a full program of African-
inspired music that was a bit of a change of pace for the Singers, but a fantastic evening was
