(Photo submitted) Saugeen Maitland Bantams win Hamilton Hawks tourney The Saugeen Maitland PeeWee AA Lightning took bronze at a Provincial tournament held in Mississauga on April 8-10. After being bumped up to AA in January with PeeWee girls just proved what hard work and believing in yourself can do. The first game saw Saugeen up against Kingston, a complete team effort turned into a 3-0 win with Mel Nolan scoring all three goals. The second game of the day was against Aurora and it took everything the girls had to squeak out a 1-1 win with Hanna Herman scoring both goals. On Saturday morning, the girls found themselves fighting for the top spot in the division with the next opponent of Brampton. After a hard physical game with Brampton Saugeen the Lightning came away with a 1-0 win with Neve VanPelt scoring the lone goal. This 3-0 record now set the stage for the quarter-final game against Gloucester. With the medal round in the back of these girls minds, nothing was going to stop them. The girls came out flying and never really looked back, with the final score 4-1 for Saugeen. Goals were scored by Van Pelt, Delayna Smith and Avery Reeves. On Sunday morning, the Lightning ran into a very strong Leaside team, and they knew they were in for the game of their lives. The girls came to play, but ran into some unbelievable goaltending from this team. After outworking, outplaying, heavy outshooting this Leaside team, the girls still came up short in a 2-0 loss. After the semi- final loss the girls had to muster up enough courage and strength to face a strong London team for the bronze medal. With back-to-back action and great play from both ends of the ice, the girls got the break they needed and got the first goal, against a very strong London goaltender. The one goal seemed to be enough for the girls to close the door on any hopes of London getting back into the game for a 1-0 win. Van Pelt scored the lone goal. The team received solid goaltending all weekend from Cassidy Becker; outstanding defence by Abbi Akins, Hanna Herman, Kayla McCabe, Brie Becker. Offence who helped throughout the weekend was received from Kaitlyn Eckert, Jessica Dales, Amy Hepburn and Olivia Linklater. The Saugeen Maitland Bantam AA Lightning took part in the Hamilton Hawks tournament on April 2-4 weekend and managed to walk away with top honours despite losing to Barrie 3-1. The girls had a great weekend and played well. They competed with Hamilton and won 7-1 and then played Stratford and won 5-1. They lost to Barrie 3-1 and moved into the semi-finals with London. The game was very rough, but Saugeen came out on top with a 2-1 win. They then moved into the finals with Barrie. The girls were determined to win gold and they did just that with a 3- 0 win. Earlier this month the girls went to the provincial finals with a few injuries, but the girls were willing to take on any challenge. With their first game against the top team of Ontario, Ottawa, the girls had a great start, but the Senators scored first. Only minutes later, Kailyn Soers netted a nice goal with Hailey Herman assisting but Ottawa came out strong in the third and scored two quick goals to finish the game 3- 1. The next game was against Whitby. It was another good win by a score of 4-1. Goals were scored by Miranda Lantz, Taylor Weber, Lexi Smith and Ashley Lawrence. The third game was against West Northumberland and it was another win by a score of 4-1. They moved onto the qualifiers with Clarington for a tough game. The girls lost 2-1. The Lightning ran out of time, but had a great year. Shae Tiley and Haileigh Deplantis played well in net and the Lightning finished in the top ten of Ontario. Skipping to victory Murray Hoover skipped his team to victory on March 25 at the Brussels Curling Club’s year-end banquet. His team, which also consisted of Martin Thomet and Karen Uhler, finished in first place in the event’s third draw at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre. (Vicky Bremner photo) Ending on a high note The Saugeen Maitland Bantam AA Lightning ended the season on a high note as they won a tournament in Hamilton. That, coupled with an admirable showing at the year-end provincial tournament resulted in the girls finishing the season in the top 10 of Ontario. (Photo submitted)
