NEWS
FROM BRUSSELS
Photos remind area of conservation area’s valueOnce again the wonders ofspring – the snow, the sun, the rain,
the snow, the wind, the snow, and
ever and always, the wonder of the
weather. What would we talk if it
was stable and boring?
The Maitland Conservation
Foundation had another fun evening
on Friday. For over 20 years this
group has funded education with
this event. The Wawanosh Nature
Centre holds many fine memories
for thousands of people, especially
students and this event reminds
us of the importance of
conservation education. Large
pictures line the walls at the
Brussels, Morris and Grey
Community Centre each year for
decoration, but also highlight
events, children, water, flowers and
this year a cute raccoon peeking
from a tree and a woodpecker inaction.
These pictures remind folks why
they need to open their wallets and
help in the protection of our
watershed. This water is too close to
home to ignore. Good food offered
by Cardiff Catering, you know the
crew, gets everyone in a good mood.
The fun is in trying to decide how
badly you need the carved walking
cane or stool or even the kayak or a
week at a cottage or some children’s
book, and then defending your bid
through silent or live auction.
It’s all part of a great evening
where you catch up with people you
may see once a year, then, enjoy the
many treats that people so
generously donate, including a
booklet, donated by Blyth Printing,
that tells just how many people it
takes to make this event such a goodevening. Be sure to visit the Nature
Centre at least once this year, they
have some great events for adults
and children of course.
Peter Workman was in for a wee
visit last week. He was checking on
the well-being of Dad and since all
is well, he returned to Nunavut on
Sunday.
Easter is fast approaching and
with it the preparations that come
with the gathering of family. We
need to remember that it is not just
food that brings the offspring
back, but the love, memories
and friendships that have
developed.
Easter is a fun gathering as we
celebrate new life, we celebrate life
itself and as Christians we celebrate
the resurrection and life eternal. Oh
yes, life is very good.
In case you’re feeling frazzled –
the Brussels United Church folks
have your baking ready.
Pick it up Saturday morning after
10 a.m. and stay and have a coffee
while you contemplate life and all
that is good.
May you have a blessed Easter.

A NOTE FROM BETTY
At the Branch
Huron Feeding Systems sponsors OMAFRA expert
By Jo-Ann McDonald
Spring cleanup even happens at
the Brussels Legion Branch and the
outside yard work has started. The
Cadets cleaned up the larger sticks
and picked up the garbage off the
lawn this week. A member of the
Branch will sweep the lawn where
able and the Cadets will rake the rest
of the lawn on their sports night.
The Branch welcomed a Ministry
of Agriculture, Food and Rural
Affairs sponsored workshop on
April 13. The workshop was on
grain drying and storage and was
offered to serve the farmer’s needs
of the area. The workshop was
conducted by Helmut Spieser, an
engineer at the Ministry. The day
was provided courtesy of Huron
Feeding Systems of Brussels and
ran from 9 a.m. until after 3:30 p.m.
They provided a roast beef meal for
the group of 38 at noon.
Helpers for the Branch on
Wednesday included Deb Cann, Jo-
Ann McDonald, Mary Bradshaw
and Mabel Glanville. Good job
ladies.
The final night of the Thursday
night dart league had the players
enjoying some fun and interesting
games. They played Strikeout, Rake
the Leaves, Wind the Clock and
Springtime. Finishing first for the
night was pair Ron Schmidt and
Sandra Josling; second, Alice
Clifford, Bush Whittard and Penny
Reynolds; high shot of the night,
Gord Jacklin, 152. The group
enjoyed a variety of snacks and lots
of fun.
Prizes were handed out to the
many darters. Winners were: high
stars, Penny Reynolds, 124 and Ron
Schmidt, 120; high finish, Sandra,
91 and Ron, 101; most stars, Sandra
and Gord Jacklin; most finishes,
Roger McHardy and Penny
Reynolds; most skunks, Greta Zehr;
most improved, Marlene Rutledge;
high shots of 140, Ron, Sandra,
Bush, Harry Smith, Greta, Glen
Zehr, Penny and Tim Harrison; most
skunks, Daisy Wong and Harry
Smith. It has been a great year and
the Branch wishes everyone a good
summer and hopes to see everyone
back after Thanksgiving.
The Friday night supper of roast
beef was a sellout with over 40
arriving to dine. Next week is Good
Friday and there will be no supper
and the Branch will be closed on
Final countdown
The last round of awards for the Brussels Minor Hockey
Association before amalgamation were awarded on April
12 as the final year-end banquet was held. With
amalgamation, future awards will be coming from a joint
hockey association, provided membership votes for it next
year. Jarron Thompson, centre, was awarded the Donald
