Total receipts for Brussels
Livestock for the week ending April
8 were 2,404 cattle, 1,355 lambs and
goats. On Tuesday fed steers and
heifers sold on an active trade with
prices $4 to $5 higher Choice steers
and heifers sold $110 - $116 with
sales to $125.25. Second cut sold
$103 to $109. Cows sold fully
steady. On Thursday holstein veal
calves traded $1 to $2 higher, while
beef veal traded steady. Lambs sold
on a strong active trade. Sheep were
steady to last week’s prices. Kid
goats sold strong while nanny goats
sold barely steady. On Friday, calves
and yearlings sold on a strong active
trade.
There were 244 steers on offer.

The Huron County Federation of
Agriculture is sponsoring an all-
candidates meeting at which each
Huron-Bruce candidate will have
the opportunity to state their
platform and ideas. The meeting
will be held at the Goderich
Township Hall in Holmesville on
Tuesday, April 19 starting at 8 p.m.
Questions will be asked by the
moderator and a half-hour open
question period will be held at the
end of the meeting.
A number of issues will be
expected to be raised to the
candidates, including the value of
the farm sector viewed from an
economic, environmental and social
perspective and the necessary
respect for agriculture's viewpoints
and the need for a National Food
Strategy that provides a fair return to
all sectors in the food system so
Canadians have access to a healthy
food supply. Attention is required to
beginning farmers’ assistance
focusing on methods to ease entry
into the agriculture industry with
financial help and marketing
programs. consideration of trade
agreements and the necessity of
agriculture’s consultation before
they are signed and payment for the
services farmers provide for
environmental protection.
Bette Jean Crews, President of the
Ontario Federation of Agriculture
recently made an advisory statement
concerning farm issues in the
upcoming federal election. “As
farmers, it’s our responsibility to
ensure that our collective voice is
heard at the highest level of
Canadian government and to truly
make our vote count. We need to
ensure all candidates recognize the
value of farming to our economic
and social well-being and
implement the policies we need.
Now is not the time to be timid, we
need to vote.”
