Thank You Volunteers
National Volunteer Week is a time for us to pause and celebrate the energy and commitment
of our volunteers. The dedicated volunteers at our respective hospitals serve their communi-
ties well. It is at this time we want to express to them our appreciation for the great job they do
for our programs and facilities. Volunteers contribute their unique talents, skills and knowl-
edge, which in turn contribute immensely to our sense of connectedness and values.
Volunteering helps build a better, stronger, and healthier community. We appreciate the time
that our volunteers spend with us, so this month, take time to express to them a brief “Thank
you” because they truly make a difference in our lives, and the life of your community.

Songfest fills Londesborough United Church
A seat was difficult to find at
Londesborough United Church
Sunday, April 10 for the 31st Annual
Songfest. This is always an
entertaining evening of musical
talent. This year’s performers ranged
from solo acts to a small choir and
all the groups came from our own
area.
The program was emceed by John
Jewitt who entertained with a Robert
Service poem. John was dressed in
his kilt and at the program’s close
played his bagpipes. The evening
was arranged by Londesborough
United’s organist and choir director,
Barb Bosman.
The Walsh Sisters from
Egmondville opened the show.
Kristen and Evelyn, 12 and nine
years old respectively, are a multi-
talented pair. Both girls played piano
solos and stepdanced. Kristen sang,
“Good Morning, Baltimore” from
the movie Hairspray. Evelyn sang
“My Favourite Things” from The
Sound of Music.
The Durnin Brothers from theAuburn area had everyone’s toestapping to their violin selections. They played French medleys, a
Scottish Aire and waltzes. Their
final selection was “The Orange
Blossom Special”, made famous by
Johnny Cash. Mom Heather offered
piano backup.
Three women with ties to
Londesborough United came out of
retirement to sing together again.
Marsha Szusz and her daughters,
Kerri Grant and Jenn Elliott, sang an
Alyson Kraus number, “Down in the
River to Pray”. Jenn and Jeanette
Seers both work at Huronview
where music is a therapy to the
residents. Jenn gave piano
accompaniment for Jeanette who
played a Cape Breton tune on her
violin.
One could imagine the Alps being
alive with the sounds of Alpenhorns
as played by Walter and Kathy
Eigenheer. Walter explained how the
horns are fashioned out of a pine
tree. The horns have been played for
hundreds of years in the Alps, Spain
and Russia by herdsmen and
shepherds. The couple demonstrated
that the horns of persons playing
together must be of the same length
for an ‘in tune’ sound.
The nine children of Bruce and
Marie Bergsma constitute a choir all
on their own. All of them have been
encouraged over the years by their
parents to share their voices.
Apparently they have at smaller
gatherings and in smaller groups.
They dedicated their performance
that evening, as a whole group, to
their parents. They offered gospel
style music , such as “Shine, Jesus,
Shine in various combinations of
voices. A homegrown group, raised
at the edge of Londesborough, they
were a hit with the crowd. Barb
Bosman played piano
accompaniment.
The quartet of Deb Siertsema,
Darlene VanderVeen, Jim Parrish
and Calvin Bakelaar call themselves
“Redeemed”. They all live in the
Blyth area and have been singing
together for 10 years. The girls play
guitar, Jim plays electric guitar and
Calvin keeps them in time on the
drums. Their Christian music
included “Only by Your Grace” and
“You Died for Me to Be”.
Anyone in attendance will surely
be watching for next year’s date to
be announced for it is a night of
inspiring and familiar, easy to listen
to music.
NEWS
FROM LONDESBORO
Belt it out
The Bergsmas, a choir featuring several members of the Bergsma family, was one of the first
performers at Sunday night’s Songfest at Londesborough United Church. This is the 31st year
that Songfest has taken place and it featured performances by The Szusz family and friend,
Marshall and Ethan Durnin and Kristen and Evelyn Walsh among others. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
The east end of Londesborough
Road was closed for several hours
on April 5. Adam Beisinger was the
driver of a car that went off the road,
over the laneway at the Hillis’ farm
and rolled in the field in the early
morning hours. Adam is still in a
London hospital at the time of
reporting recovering from his rather
serious injuries.
I neglected to mention that April is
cancer awareness month. Volunteers
will be out selling bunches of
daffodils that will surely brighten
your spring and perhaps encourage
you to spend some time with
someone dealing with this disease.
The Londesborough Community
Hall was the setting for the wedding
and celebration meal of Richard
Bergsma and Tracey Philiatro on
Saturday, April 9. It is a second
marriage for both Richard and
Tracey and they are living just east
of London Road on the Winthrop
Road. Tracey and her children may
find life in this area a trifle different
than life in Oshawa. Congratulations
and best wishes from the
community.
