Salvation by Grace!
from F.H. Spurgeon
No sinner will ever come to Christ apart from the quickening, enlightening,
drawing, converting power of the Holy Spirit, supernaturally exercised upon the
conscience and heart.
Until grace comes into our souls we have no heart for the things of God. We may
be fussily religious so far as to be attentive to every ‘outward form of worship’; but
there is no heart-work, no light of truth in all our devotion. But when once the
divine light comes in, then we become intensely real in our dealings with God.
When the grace of God comes, the Holy Spirit brings us out from under the
dominion of the old nature by creating within us a new life, and he brings us out
from under the tyranny of the Prince of Darkness by opening our eyes to see, and
our minds to understand celestial truth. The opening of our blind eyes and the
pouring in of the light of truth are from the Lord.
The entrance of God’s word into the mind by the power of the Holy Spirit gives us
light as to--ourselves, our sin, and our danger. With this comes light as to the way
of salvation through Jesus Christ, and light as to the mind of God concerning our
sanctification. True knowledge takes the place of ignorance, and a desire for purity
becomes supreme over the love of sin.
Not all the temptations of life, nor all the terrors of death, nor all the furies of hell,
shall prevent any soul upon whom God has begun his work of grace from reaching
external salvation. What a blessing is this, and what a comfort it is!
‘The salvation of the righteous is of the Lord.’

Greeting worshippers at Blyth
United Church on Sunday, April 10
were Barb and Terry Richmond.
Ushering were Elaine Chamney and
Arletta Hallahan. Floyd Herman
was music director. Rev. Gary Clark
welcomed everyone to church.
The UCW had another successful
Women’s Day Out this past
Saturday. He also mentioned the
“Walk the Story” in which all the
churches in Blyth are taking part on
April 17 from 6:30 to approximately
8:30 p.m. starting at the Church of
God. They are walking or driving
from church to church to tell the
Easter Story.
The first hymn was “Beneath the
Cross of Jesus” followed by the
prayer of approach and invocation
repeated responsively, the hymn “O
God We Call”, the prayer of
confession and the singing of the
assurance of pardon.
The children were invited for their
storytime at the front of the church.
Rev. Clark told them that maybe it
would be better to save the pennies
that they spend on candy, so that
when something more expensive
comes along they will have the
money to buy it. The children said a
prayer along with the congregation
and went downstairs for their time
of fellowship.
The scripture reading was from
John 11:1-45. The choir favoured
the congregation by singing the
anthem, “A Lenten Lesson.” Rev.
Clark’s message to the adults was “a
penny saved is penny earned.” The
next hymn “Immortal, Invisible
God” was sung followed by the
receiving of the offering, the
offering response, “O Jesus I Have
Promised” and the prayer of
dedication. Cheryl Cronin and Avon
Corneil favoured the congregation
with a duet, “I Walked into the
Garden.”
The prayers for the world were
said with a time for silent prayer and
followed by the singing of The
Lord’s Prayer. The last hymn, “Love
Divine” was followed by the
commissioning, the benedictions
and the choral response was the
third verse of the hymn, “Love
Divine”.
Everyone was invited for
coffee and fellowship after the
service.

On April 5 Blyth Public School
had a Virtues Assembly. This
month’s virtue was Optimism.
Many students were acknowledged
for their perception of whether “the
glass was half full or half empty”.
There was also a special
presentation on a mission trip to
Nicaragua and students were asked
to fill a hockey bag with school
supplies like pencils, paper, and
sharpeners. Also during the
assembly, students were recognized
by the Blyth Legion for public
speaking and Remembrance Day
entries.
Several teachers went to a special
“Tribes Training” from April 6 to 8.
The teachers were there to learn
how to make the classroom a group
or community and to help students
work more collaboratively together.
In Mrs. Armstrong’s class, the
students have begun to learn about a
writer’s voice and characteristics to
look for while reading. The students
then had to pick two authors and
using certain characteristics, tried to
copy the way an author writes. In
science, the students are learning
about radiation, convection and
conduction.
Mrs. Decker and several students
are going to a special presentation
at Northwestern Secondary School
in Stratford. The students will be
addressed by David Suzuki in the
morning and then will be split up
into groups to share special school
projects.
This week the Grade 7/8 students
have a brand new project where
they pick a country that speaks
French and they have to research it
and put all the information together
into a presentation.
The junior kindergarten and
senior kindergarten classes are
learning how to move their bodies
with the beat of music in the gym
class with Mrs. Zembashi and in
class with their home teacher, Mrs.
Thorpe-Hearn. The junior class
spent some more time on a dinosaur
unit and concentrated on the
triceratops. Also, they focused on
the letter “J”. In math they played
math games, concentrating on
numbers one through five.
The senior class has been trying
out a new math lesson style called
Bansho. This involves them
working in pairs using various
methods of independently solving
math problems. They continued on
with their unit on time and sorted
the 12 months and their symbols
into the four seasons.
Also, in the Grade 1/2 class,
students are dividing into math
groups and practising strategies to
meet their specific learning needs.
We’re looking forward to seeing everyone again this spring...
Our plants are looking great and we’re getting ready
for another exciting season.
Now is a good time to bring in your containers for custom
planting or placing orders.
