NEWS
FROM BRUSSELS
Brussels gets busy with spring cleaning
The dust was flying high on
Saturday as the rakes and shovels hit
the ground chasing the ever-present
sticks and stones. It’s always quite
amazing how much the snow can
conceal. Bodies were busy all
around the village moving the dregs
of the last seasons, anticipating therain that would wash the lawn. Partof the thrill of spring is finding thatthe bike is in good repair and then
taking that first spin just to be sure.
The neighbourhood kids have it all
together and are ready to enjoy
whatever the day has to offer.
Running, swinging, kicking balls
and dancing in the rain were all part
of our entertainment as we watched
the children enjoy the first days of
warmth.
Brussels visitors to Women’s Day
Out in Blyth on Saturday report that
the United Church crew once again
offered a fun day, a time just to enjoy
life and all the good things it has to
offer – food, fun, laughter and
friends. What more could youpossibly want? One of the great things aboutbeing nearly retired is that time
management is a personal choice.
My choice last week was to sort
some of Dad’s paper and pictures, he
died in 1987 – I never said I was
quick. What I found beyond the
usual pictures of my sibling, when
we wore diapers, was a wedding
booklet from 1942 from Mom and
Dad’s wedding. Charlie Mathers was
the best man. In the back of this
treasure were notes made by Mom in
1945 that told of them applying to
the Huron County Children’s Shelter
in Goderich for a baby, the next note
said that he was coming and finally
in June of 1945 “wee Bobby”arrived. Mabel Wheeler was theirfirst visitor as new parents. Whatfind. This page of notes was news to
my older brother Bob and like me
was thrilled to find these personal
details from long ago. Now will
everyone stop telling me I keep too
much “stuff”.
The final weeks of Lent are here
and with that come the noon services
in Brussels to mark the importance
of this time. The area churches offer
worship at 12:05 p.m. followed by
lunch at the Brussels United Church
starting on April 18. Join us as we
anticipate the next events that mark
the road to Christianity.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

A NOTE FROM BETTY
At the Branch
Legion requires comrades to fill executive positions
By Jo-Ann McDonald
The Cadets have been at the
Brussels Legion Branch many times
this week. They held their regular
meeting on April 5. The Cadets are
practising for their annual, which
will be held in about a month. The
officers held a planning meeting on
Wednesday to plan for the Change
of Command Ceremony. The Cadet
Corp Commanding Officer, Captain
Wegg, C.D. is retiring and the new
C.O. will be Captain Dawson. The
ceremony will be held May 10 at the
Branch. The Cadets met on Saturday
at the Branch for a day of
orienteering. They spent time at the
park. They practised knots, cleaned
up the grounds around the Legion,
ate Army rations and then had fun
with games and a tug-of-war.
The Thursday evening darts had
13 darters taking aim at the boards.
Winners were: first, Bush Whittard
and Sandra Josling; second, Daisy
Wong and Gord Jacklin; high shot,
Deb Burch, 117; high start, Sandra,
105. Thursday, April 14 is the last
night of the season. The group will
wrap up play with some fun games,
snacks and the presentation of
awards.
The Friday night supper of roast
pork was enjoyed by a crowd of
around 30. This week will be roast
beef.
The Branch fish fry crew had its
event at Grey Central Public School
on Saturday. The crew was busy
cooking for the 430 diners and they
did a great job. Comrades working
for the Branch were Rick and Jo-
Ann McDonald, Judy Lee, Norm
Dobson, Bob Richardson, Monica
Provost, Cam Ross, Kim Peacock
and George Adams. Thanks to the
Grey Firefighters for the use of their
fryer and to Murray Keffer and the
Grade 8 students for helping out,
when the numbers were up. Helping
with the prep work were Deb Caan,
Jo-Ann and Judy. The crew travels
to Londesborough at the end of the
month for the next fry.
Comrade President John Lowe
and Comrade Eric Ross attended the
District Convention in Owen Sound
on the weekend. They spent two
days attending meetings and the
elections held on the Sunday.
Elections are this month and the
nominating committee has been
contacting Comrades. We need
Comrades to take an active interest
in the Branch for it to be successful.
Please consider helping on
committees or going on the
executive and please attend the
election meeting on April 26.

Clean-up duty
It wasn’t all about stuffing your face with delicious food at
Melville Presbyterian Church’s annual springtime supper
on Sunday night, there was plenty of work left to be done
behind the scenes, including washing up. Hebo Siertsema,
left, and Maurice Douma were on wash-up duty while
diners did their part, cleaning their plates in the dining hall.
