On the prowl
The Hullett Central Public School Hawks were in heavy
competition on March 31 at Central Huron Secondary
School, coming up just short against Huron Centennial
Public School by a score of 10-9. Central Huron Secondary
School holds an annual public basketball school
tournament for its feeder schools. Kenny Huether was on

By Zach and Nathan Watson
The F.E. Madill Secondary School
Boys Ruby team’s trip to the United
Kingdom over March Break was an
awesome experience. For Zach this
was his second trip and he loved it
even more than the first. For Nathan
this was a new experience and a
great learning opportunity.
We started out in Scotland,
arriving Glasgow and stayed with
families in Perth. The team was
welcomed by their hosts by
attending and celebrating a
traditional Ceilidh. Zachary donned
a Scottish Kilt and danced with the
locals. The locals indicated that if
you wear underwear with a kilt and
your friends find out you have to
drink your beer through your
underwear. The team toured the
Edinburgh Castle. The Rugby match
against Perth Academy by both a
junior group and a senior team
proved to be very close games. The
weather was rainy and cool.
The next stop was
Edinburgh/Kettering. The team
played a match against the Bishop
Stopford School. They definitely
outplayed Madill; however, the local
coaches reported to friends that the
Madill boys were very fast and
tough. At this town everyone got to
explore the School of Rugby and the
origins of the game. Web Ellis (or his
statue) who started the game was the
star of the photos at this location.
The weather was warmer than in
Scotland but included a lot of clouds.
We moved on to Bargoed, Wales,
where we experienced a tour of the
Millennium Stadium. It’s a hugh
venue where they play rugby, soccer
and cricket. We then met up with
hosts from the Cwm Rhymni
School. The boys played laser tag
and it was a good break from
touring. The team visited what is
called the “Big Pit” and went down
below ground into a coal mine. The
tour of the museum included the
yellow canaries. Fortunately they
don’t send the canaries down to test
for gas any more. The game against
the Cwm Rhymni School was
another loss but the boys felt that
they played well and stayed close,
For the last few days the team
stayed right in London, England. We
toured the city and saw Buckingham
Palace and the famous London
Bridge. The London Eye which is a
huge ferris wheel had too big a line
to try but was amazing to see. The
weather in London was warm and
sunny.
It seemed they had crazy drivers
over there. We have now added quite
a few people from the UK to our
Facebook friends. The girls seemed
to like our boys and the boys had a
reputation for being fast and strong
on the field. It was cool to see how
they live, interesting and not that
much different than us. It did seem
that their houses seem more
squished together. Our families
report we were talking with an
accent when typing on Facebook
saying things like, “having loads of
fun!” Flying wasn’t bad. Travelling
around and seeing the sites was fun
but it was good to come home, too.
Thanks to the coaches and
chaperones, it was an awesome
experience.

Take it to the body
A body checking clinic was held at the Blyth and District
Community Centre last week on March 23 and 24 for the
PeeWee and Bantam divisions. Instructors were James
Marsden and Mitchell Good of the Waterloo Hawks. (Jim

Time to celebrate
Members of the Brussels Curling Club celebrated another successful season on March 25 at
the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre with the club’s final draws of the season.
These skilled men came out on top of the first draw. Merv Bauer, centre, skipped the team to
victory with the help of vice Don Chesher, left, and Cory Campbell. (Vicky Bremner photo)
