Play rings true despite being 80 years old
The wonders of April are with us,
you know, you wonder what the
weather will be in the next hour.
Sunday afternoon certainly brought
that home. Dry roads in the
afternoon soon moved into inches of
sloppy slush, making driving most
unpleasant. Oh well, it’s April
Co-operation was the word, as
“Epic Youth Presents” offered shows
on the weekend at Blyth Festival.
The presentation was The Good Soul
of Szechuan by Bertolt Brecht a
German born in 1898 and translated
by David Harrower. High school
students, the Blyth Festival, theHuron County Library, the BlythLion’s Club, Farthest Star, the Boardof Education and the Ontario Arts
Council all co-operated to give the
young people a chance to really “do
theatre”. For us it was a reminder
that no matter how things change,
they really are quite the same. Words
and scenes from this 1930’s play
could be seen and heard in many
parts of Huron County today. The
story line was that there are bad
people everywhere, but as long as
one person keeps doing good, the
world is not lost.
The students did an excellent job
in all the roles of live theatre
production. The familiar names to us
were Andrew Watson, Emily
Kerkhof and Becca and Beth
Beardsley. Good job to all and
thanks for the reminder that good
people have an important place in
the world.
For anyone who’s been missing
Sheila Richards in our midst, she’s
been spending quality time with thestaff at University Hospital. SonDoug reports that she’s on the roadto recovery and getting her strength
back. We miss you Sheila, now get
back to Brussels.
For next week don’t forget to get
your tickets for the Presbyterian
supper and for the Maitland
Foundation fundraiser, both will be
a nice change from the snow.Enjoy the sights and sounds ofspring, there are lots of themaround; the wee heads of the crocus,
the tundra swans, the motorcycles,
people without coats, sand on the
kitchen floor and the new growth all
around us.
Take care of yourself.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

A NOTE FROM BETTY
At the Branch
Agromart hosts dinner
By Jo-Ann McDonald
There was activity at the Brussels
Legion Branch almost every day last
week. The Cadet Corps met on
Tuesday evening as usual. They
practised their drill and required
lessons for each level of Cadets.
They are still collecting pop cans
and returnable bottles and they can
be dropped off at the Branch on
Tuesday for pickup on Tuesday
evening.
The Brussels Agromart held its
annual customer appreciation and
meeting day on Wednesday at the
Branch. Their day began at 9 am.
with a breakfast and then
presentations on the coming crop
year were made.
The Thursday night dart league
had 15 players taking aim at the
boards. Winners were: first, Roger
McHardy and Daisy Wong; second,
Harry Smith and Marlene Rutledge;
high shots, Daisy, 125 and Bush
Whittard, 104.
The Friday night supper of turkey
pot pie and biscuits was enjoyed by
a smaller crowd. This week will be
roast pork.
The Saturday afternoon euchre
had 10.5 tables in play. Winners
were: first, George and Deanna
Bacon, 77; second, Joann
MacDonald and Dorothy Carter, 75;
third, Doreen and Marjorie, 74; low,
Frank and Betty Hulley, 45; lone
hand, Marie Stewart and Eileen
Sellers.
The silent auction had a good
turnout for the day with around 60
bidders for the day. Comrades of the
Branch supplied about 115 beautiful
items for the auction and a delicious
array of baked goods was offered.
We appreciate all the Comrades for
their donations and support of the
good people of Brussels. Comrades
helping out for the auction included
Sandra Josling, Heather Dauphin,
Lisa Glanville, Linda Bird, Deb
Caan, Jo-Ann McDonald, Daisy
Wong, Wanda Walker and Mabel
Glanville.
The Sunday night dance crowd
enjoyed the music of Backroad
Country. The nearly 60 had plenty
of room for dancing. The heavy, wet
snow began about 5:30 p.m. so kept
quite a few folks home. Comrades
Jo-Ann McDonald, Judy Lee,
Mabel Glanville and Mary
Bradshaw did a fine job as usual.
