Public School to present awards to Hillary Bachert (centre)
and Sophie Cardiff (left) for their Remembrance Day poster
submissions. Cardiff took third place in the Junior Black and
White competition for Zone C-1. Bachert took first place for
her entry in the Zone C-1 Primary Black and White
competition and then proceeded to take first at the District
Primary Black and White Competition. Bachert’s poster

A group of boys from F.E. Madill
Secondary School have returned
from a rugby tour in the United
Kingdom. They were away for 10
days leaving a few days before
March Break and returning on the
Sunday evening in time for the start
of school. They had an all-night
flight from Toronto to Glasgow,
Scotland. Their first stop was the
town of St. Andrews. They stood on
the famous Swilcan Bridge of the
18th hole of the Old Course at St.
Andrews, then saw St. Rule’s Tower
overlooking the town. They
wandered around St. Andrews
University (the first University in
Scotland) and got their feet wet in
the North Sea.
Then they travelled to Perth to
meet their host school, Perth
Academy. The team was billeted
with members of Perth Academy
families. Perth Academy hosted a
traditional Scottish Ceilidh at the
school with live music, dancing and
great food.
The second day was a trip to
Edinburgh. They went through
Edinburgh castle, wandered down
the Royal Mile, and toured the
Palace of Holyrood House (the
Queen’s official residence in
Scotland). Despite the cold and the
snow, the next day was game day
where the team played two matches,
in separate junior and senior squads.
Both teams lost, but the seniors
really gave Perth Academy some
tough competition only losing by
three.
After three days in Perth, they left
Scotland and headed to Kettering to
meet their new hosts, Bishop
Stopford School. The weather was a
bit warmer, but very windy. On this
leg of the journey they toured the
town of Rugby, and particularly
Rugby School where the sport was
invented by William Webb Ellis. The
team played well, but lost in the
match against the Bishop Stopford
squad.
Then they travelled to Bargoed,
Wales to meet their next hosts, Cwm
Rhymni School and their billet
families. They travelled into Cardiff
for a day to see Cardiff Castle, take a
tour of Millenium Stadium and do
some shopping. The next day, the
boys did a day trip to The Big Pit
Coal Mine and then played their last
match. It was finally a beautiful day
for rugby and the boys played well.
The next day they headed to
London for the final stop of the tour.
The team stayed in a hostel in the
Paddington area and did a group tour
of the Tower of London. On the last
day, the team explored London on
their own. Most of the boys did the
Big Red Bus tour of the city. A
couple of the teachers got a day pass
for the tube. They went for a walk
through Hyde Park, toured
Westminster Abbey and
Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, went
up into the Tower Bridge Exhibition,
walked over Millenium Bridge up to
St. Paul’s Cathedral, shopped in
Covent Garden Market and took a
Jack The Ripper walking tour
through the east end. The tour ended
with a team meeting at the hostel
with “Man of the Match”
presentations and pizza.
There were 29 boys enjoying this
wonderful trip along with four
teacher chaperones. Boys from the
Brussels area included Kody
Higgins, Nathan and Zach Watson,
Nic Gowing, Shea McLean and
Ryan Sholdice. The senior rugby
coach is Andy Jones and the Junior
boys coach is LeeAnn Konarski. The
teacher chaperone was Dana Thiel
and the parent chaperone was Brian
Schlosser. They report having a
great time and the teams were all
very well behaved.
The B-W Trailblazers held their
year-end meeting at the Walton Hall
a week ago. Members of the club
and the landowners were invited to
attend. They enjoyed soup and beef
on a bun prior to the meeting.
President Keith Mulvey chaired the
meeting and the many discussionsthat ensued. Laurie Campbell is thenew president of the club. Membersof the Walton Hall board helping for
the evening were Judy Lee, Jo-Ann
McDonald, Judy Emmrich and Betty
McCallum.
We wish a speedy recovery to
Colleen (Collins) Smith as she
convalesces from surgery. She is
home again and is doing well.
We send get-well wishes to
Maxine Adams who is a patient in
London Hospital.
Congratulations to Grandpa Greg
Wilson and Sharon. New parents,
Shane and Minnie Wilson, of
Jackson Point, have welcomed a
baby girl to their lives. Baby Kealy
arrived last Saturday and has had abit of a rough time, but is doingbetter now. Congratulations to theWilsons.
The buck and doe for Sarah
McDonald and Barry Young was
held on Friday evening at the
Seaforth Agriplex. Sarah is the
daughter of Jim and Linda
McDonald. There was a great crowd
on hand for the evening. The couple
and the wedding party were easy to
pick out in their cute Scottish kilts.
The couple will wed at the end of
July.
A buck and doe was held for
Stephanie Rijkhof and Dan Eedy on
Saturday evening at the Seaforth
Agriplex. Stephanie is the daughter
of Gerry and Thea Rijkhof. Congratulations to the BrusselsOptimist Club on hosting anothersuccessful action. They raised
around $21,000 for their causes.
The Cranbrook Dart Club had a
good bunch out for one of the last
nights of darts. The high shot of the
night was Gayle Speiran hitting a
high of 165. Wow! There were two
men tied for high shot, hitting 138
each, Frank Workman and Nathan
Klingenberg. The Cranbrook Hall
has had some sprucing up done by
volunteers Ernie and Annette
Lewington and other helpers. They
did a good cleaning and a new paint
job and now it’s ready for spring
rental.
A sure sign of spring is the return
of the Cranbrook euchres. The first
one will be held this week and they
begin at 8 p.m. The euchre players
will see the fresh paint job of the hall
and hopefully will enjoy the season
of euchres. The euchres are the
major fundraising activity of the hall
board and are held the first and third
Fridays of the month.
While in Stratford this past week,
I ran into Mrs. Gordon Stiles. She
tells me her husband, Comrade
Gordon Stiles is in Cedar Lodge
now. He is getting along fairly well
but has a hard time getting round.
We had a nice visit with Jean, who is
Stew Steiss’s sister and she tells me
she likes to get The Citizen to keep
up with those she knows.
Our condolences are extended to
Campbell and Edith Wey on the loss
of their daughter, Dena Kale. Dena
was a sister of Debbie and Douglas
and the wife of Larry Kale. She has
made her home in the U.S. for many
years.
Celebrating birthdays this past
week and finishing up the month of
March are Christopher Gulutzen,
Ashley Hoegy, Ken Dalton, Jada
Storey, Andrea Gingerich, Becky
Laverty, Chadwick, Judy Shortreed,
Connor den Dekker, Heidi Wey,
Nicole Williamson, John Baan,
Brandy Leslie and Jack McLachlan.
