NEWS
FROM BRUSSELS
Be very careful tomorrow. It’s that
day that things get stuffed in shoes
and signs put on backs and pants get
sewn up and other things done to see
if you’re paying attention to life.
You’ve been warned, April Fool’s
Day is here.
With the departure of March we
seem to think the inclement weather
is past and so the community comesalive with things to do and places to be. The Optimist Club used thelast Saturday of March to support
the United Way this year. Good food
by Cardiff Catering set the mood
for a fun night of supporting
several groups in our community
that look to the United Way for
funding. Good work once again
guys.
On Sunday the Blyth Festival
Singers have a great concert ready
for you. It’s in Clinton United with
an African bent as their guest soloist
Denise Pelley is joining them with
lots of great music to enjoy. Get your
tickets.
The United Church bunch are
doing some different fundraising this
spring. You may know about the
wreaths that some of the creativeones have made for sale. Springwreaths, Easter, animals, gardening, princess, they have a wreath for you.
And if you’re too busy to cook while
hanging your wreath, another gang
has oven-ready food for you. Pizza,
meat pies, jam and jelly names a
few of the things that co-ordinators
Nanci Ducharme, Shauna Hamilton
and Julie Jutzi with other United
folks can order for you. So spring is
here, the concerts and fundraising
have begun in earnest.
Save April 10 for the Presbyterian
Springtime Supper. The menu is
planned and it will be ready for your
enjoyment from 4:30 to 7 p.m. that
day. So don’t miss a good supper, get
your tickets soon.
Alma, Ralph and I, met John and
Wendy on Saturday to catch up ontwo very different trips duringMarch Break. Wendy and daughterChristine took an enjoyable cruise
that involved several islands, nice
weather and all the amenities of a
cruise ship. John hit Nicaragua with
their church in a project that
involved digging a lot of clay in very
warm weather. Several other projects
were also involved to help Moravian
people be independent. John and
Wendy both are tanned and happy
with their time away and made for
very different conversations at the
table.
So do what you can with April,
including getting your income tax
papers gathered, it’s a nice month.
Enjoy.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

A NOTE FROM BETTY
At the Branch
Branch reports February as a loss due to service costs
By Jo-Ann McDonald
The week began with the
executive/general meeting being
held on Tuesday, March 22.
Comrade Deb Cann conducted the
meeting in the absence of President
John Lowe. There were eight
executive members present.
Committee reports were given and
membership stands at 131, down
slightly from 2010 members.
The canteen chairman, Eric Ross,
confirmed a positive bar report and
will be getting new liquor pourers.
Comrade Andy Overholt, Nevada
Chairman, reported that the prizes
for public speaking and other
donations have diminished the
Nevada fund and the Legion is now
on the last box of tickets. The
financial report for February showed
a loss for the month due to the high
cost of gas and hydro bills. The
catering report and the fish fry
report list many upcoming events.
Comrade Deb Cann would like
help on the nominating committee
and Comrade Wanda Walker
volunteered to help. There are
positions to fill and if any Comrade
out there would like to sit on the
executive, please call the Branch at
519-887-6562 and leave your name
and number or call Comrade Cann.
The Thursday night dart league
had 14 darters having fun. Winners
were: first, Alice Clifford, Marlene
Rutledge and Ron Schmidt; second,
Glen Zehr and Sandra Josling; high
start, Ron, 166 and Daisy Wong, 72;
high shot, Glen, 114; fifth skunk of
season, Bush Whittard, Sharon
Robbins and Greta Zehr.
The Friday night supper of ham
and scalloped potatoes was enjoyed
by near 30 diners. This week will be
turkey pot pie and biscuits.
Don’t forget to drop into the
Legion on Saturday for the silent
auction. There have been many great
items donated by members and
members can still bring items in
early Saturday morning, especially
the baking items. Everyone is
welcome.
The Brussels Legion presented a
cheque to the Brussels Optimist
Club on Saturday evening. The
cheque is for the ball park
restoration project and was 25 per
cent of the proceeds from a Legion
fundraiser. The cheque was for
$1,025.
