Melville Guild and WMS
plan for springtime supper
The March meeting of Melville
Guild and Women’s Missionary
Society was held in the church
parlour on Tuesday, March 15
with nine members present. Jean
Bewley opened the meeting with
the “Call to Worship” and the
WMS Purpose was repeated by
all.
The hymn “Take My Life and Let
it be” was sung and Jean Bewley led
in prayer. The scripture, taken from
Matthew 5: 1-16 was read in unison.
Alice Marks read the topic, “What is
Lent?” and the hymn, “Lord, who
throughout these forty days” was
sung. The Mizpah benediction was
repeated by all to close this part of
the meeting.
President, Cathrine Campbell
presided over the business. The
minutes of the February meeting
were read by secretary, Dona
Knight. Mary Douma moved to
adopt the minutes as read, seconded
by Leona Armstrong. The
correspondence included a thank
you from the Knight family for the
lovely lunch that was served after
Carla’s funeral. The collection was
taken, followed by prayer. The roll
call was answered with everyone
telling the highlights of the last trip
they went on. Alice Marks reported
that there are some changes on the
funeral lunch committee. Edna
McLellan will be taking over from
Jean Bewley and Margaret Black
will be taking over from Marg Work.
After many years on the committee
Mrs. Bewley and Mrs. Work decided
it was time to retire.
The springtime supper to be held
in Melville Presbyterian Church on
April 10 was discussed and
Missionary Awareness Sunday was
discussed. Jeanne Kirkby and Dona
Knight will be in charge of devotions
for the April meeting.
Elaine Armstrong moved to
adjourn the meeting and Rev.
Campbell closed the meeting with
prayer. A lovely lunch was served by
Jean Bewley and Alice Marks.

Blyth United Church
Last week I returned from a
vacation in Western Canada.
Yes I know. For many leaving
snow and minus -15ºC weather to go
to snow and minus -30ºC weather
does sound not very inviting or
vacation like.
For me the reason for going on this
trip was a little grandchild, his
parents and other families and
friends.
Part of that visit involved going for
a run with my old running buddy Ed.
For my last eight years in
Winnipeg, Ed and I took up running
and every Saturday morning found
us hitting the streets of “The
Peg”.
Our success (as in we kept running
in spite of complaining knees) led us
to try our running shoes at a number
of half marathons. But mostly it was
an opportunity
to take an hour out of our busy
weeks just to shoot the breeze
as we shuffled along the
pavement.
We spoke of children, spouses,
parents, defeats and victories,
heartache and joy.
It was wonderful to have a friend
with whom I could share pretty
much anything that was in my head
and heart. As I reflect on all the
relationships in my life that have
been like this, I believe that
those relationships are Holy. Yep,
Holy!
I say that because it is one of the
deepest needs of our souls to know
and be known by others. This means
there is a human need to have
relationships that extend beyond
having 500 “friends” on your
Facebook account. This means
having people in your life with
whom you can be totally yourself,
warts and all.
I believe this need arises from the
relationship we were created to have
with God. God knows us and wants
us to know God. But we don’t often
know God and therefore have no
idea just how much God knows and
cares for us.
For me I can not even remember
how the deepest relationships got
that way. Did we become good
friends because I spent more
and more time with them? Or did I
spend more time with them because
they were friends? What I do know
is that to maintain those
relationships takes time. A quick
phone call because I have a little free
time is better than no conversation
at all, but for relationships to grow,
it means setting aside quality time to
talk and to listen. The same is
true for our relationship with God. A
quick prayer before a exam or
job interview is better than
nothing. I mean at least it
acknowledges a relationship.
But to grow in that relationship
means taking or making regular
time to spend in God’s
presence.
We don’t always have an Ed in our
lives and sometimes life takes those
people out of our lives when we need
them most. But God will always be
there to face the joys and struggles
of life no matter what. Whether or
not we feel close enough to God in
those desperate times to be
supported by God often depends on
whether we have taken time to be
with God before those time hit. That
is true for all relationships. I guess
that is why I went west on my
vacation. I cannot expect to have a
lifelong relationship with my
grandson unless I make the time.
And I cannot expect to have a
relationship with God unless I make
the time.
In both cases it will be time
well spent and will make life
more worth the living.
