Huron East Council approved its
annual round of grants at its March
8 meeting.
Many of the grants approved are
identical to those that were
approved last year, but due to the

Agricultural Society, for 2011 only,
council raised its annual
contribution to the fall fair from
$1,000 to $1,500.
Other contributions are as
follows: $100 to the Belgrave, Blyth
and Brussels School Fair, $550 to
the Brussels Horticultural Society,

Kid’s Booster Club, $250 to the
Huron Plowmen’s Association,
$7,000 to the Seaforth Lions Club

in 2010 after a request came from
the Lions concerning rising costs
associated with maintaining a
community pool), $500 to the
Clinton Lions Club, $400 for the
Maitland Bank Cemetery, two
donations to the Royal Canadian
Legion to cover the cost of poppies
and wreaths for Remembrance Day,
$500 for the Seaforth Agricultural
Fall Fair, $1,000 and a donation of a
hall rental fee to the Seaforth and
District All Girls Marching Band,

Columban Soccer, $700 to the Van

Walton Area Sports Club and $500
to the Winthrop Ball Park.
Approved grants for 2011 totalled
just over $18,000.
Two couples from Brussels have
returned from a fantastic vacation in
the southern United States. Murray
and Ruth Lowe and Keith White and
Jane Ross flew to Phoenix, Arizona
for a two-week stay around that
area. This was Keith’s first time
away and it is reported that he was
really keen to go and see the
sights.
They were based at Mesa, Arizona
and rented a car to travel to other
scenic spots. They took a couple of
days and went to the Grand Canyon,
stayed in Tuscan and then went to
the Hoover Dam. Ruth reports that
they didn’t go down on the mule
tour to the floor of the Grand
Canyon as it was scary enough
just looking down. The path down
looked far too narrow for their
liking but it was a beautiful
landscape and area. They did go
under the Hoover Dam for the tour.
It is well-lit and the massive turbines
that run were amazing. the tours had
closed down for several years
following 9/11 but are reopened
now.
The foursome went somewhere
everyday and enjoyed two
different cruises on the surrounding
lakes. They even met folks
from St. Marys on one of the
cruises.
They went on a jeep tour of the
desert and went to a gold mine tour.
They went to a working ranch to
enjoy the day and it featured an
authentic western town. It had a gold
mine and Jane panned for gold. She
found a small speck of gold, had it
on her finger and then dropped it and
could not find it again. Darn
anyway!
They spent a day at a ghost town
that featured a gun fight, a tour down
into a gold mine but didn’t see any
ghosts. A side trip to Globe, about
75 miles in the middle of nowhere,
to a casino was enjoyed. There are
many native reserves of different
tribes, around the area and they all
have a casino. The group limited
themselves to four visits to
casinos and Ruth reports that the
Lowe luck held for her but not
Murray.
They enjoyed their time away
seeing the many different areas and
the varying kinds of scenery,
mountains, lush green areas, desert,
flat roads and windy roads to travel.
The weather was great, hot, too hot
for Murray, about 85 degrees
everyday. They had a great time and
it is reported that Oliver, the grand
dog, really missed Murray and Ruth.
Welcome back folks.
Also returning from a week’s
vacation in Florida are Steve and
Marni Knight. They enjoyed a
holiday with Brad and Christine
Knight and sister Joanne and
Weldon Black, Andrew and Allison.
They had a rented house in the St.
Petersburg area and had a lot of fun
together. They went to Busch
Gardens and went on an Orange
Grove tour. They also went to a
Tampa Bay Lightning hockey game.
They saw the Lightning take on
Chicago. The game was tied after
regular time and after overtime, and
then had to go to a shootout. They
felt they really got their money’s
worth at that game. they spent some
time at the beautiful St. Pete’s Beach
but also spent lots of time at the
house pool. They had great weather
until the last morning, when they
woke up to only 54 degrees and a
high of 66 degrees that day. Steve
reports that the St. Pete’s area is a
very busy area with lots of traffic not
the area you would retire to. They
enjoyed their trip, the visit with
family members, the good
weather and are happy to be home
again.
Welcome to March Break! The
school children, teachers and bus
drivers managed to start March
Break one or two days earlier than
expected last week because of the
weather. Some schools cancelled on
Thursday and then most schools
cancelled on Friday. It was a nasty
day out there on Friday and the snow
was wet, heavy and slippery. No
hydro was a problem for some areas,
including Brussels, so it meant
the cancellation of other activities
including going to work for
some.
A reminder to all, and a job I did
not do, is to get your income tax
information together. It is only a
little over six weeks and it will be
the end of April. I am one of those
people who all of a sudden is in the
middle of April and am still getting
organized. Maybe this year will be
different.
The Canadian’ Men’s Curling
Championship, the Brier, was held
in London this past week. Curling
enthusiasts went to games at the
John Labatt Centre in London or
have been glued to their television
sets, or both this past week. There
were many area folks attending
games sometime during the week
including ourselves, Rick and Jo-
Ann McDonald, as well as Leslie
and Yvonne Knight, Tom and Brian
Warwick, Doug and Wilma Rathwell
and Neil and Marie McGavin, just to
name a few. I know there were many
more, but it was very strange we did
not see anyone from the Brussels
area the day we were there. It was
funny though, that a building that
holds thousands, we sat beside
people from Seaforth. We did not
know them, but enjoyed meeting
them.
Congratulations to Chad and
Crystal McCallum on the birth of a
second daughter, Bridget Ann. She is
a little sister for Kaleigh and is
already a week old. Bridget makes
the third granddaughter and one
grandson for Ron and Betty
McCallum and the second little
granddaughter for Calvin and Gail
Semple.
Our sympathies are extended to
the Thornton family, formerly of
Brussels on the passing of Carol
Thornton. Left to mourn are her
husband Bob and children Dianne,
Steven and Twyla and families.
Carol was a crossing guard for the
school children for many years
before moving to Mitchell about
10 years ago. Our condolences to
all.
A buck and doe was held last
weekend for the daughter of a
former Walton girl. The party was
held in Seaforth at the Agriplex for
Denise Carnochan and Steve Van
Amersfoort. Denise is the daughter
of Gord and Janice (Houston)
Carnochan of Seaforth. There were
lots of people from the Brussels
area, Seaforth and Blyth.
It was a birthday celebration for
Anna McNichol last weekend at the
home of Jim and Danica McNichol.
Anna celebrated her 87th birthday
with 20 members of her family. They
enjoyed a catered meal and lovely
afternoon together. Later, about 14
Rammeloo family members arrived
to surprise Danica and celebrate her
50th birthday with her. It was a full
house and a fun time for all.
Duff’s United Church wants to
remind current and former members
about their Centennial project. They
are putting together a cookbook and
want recipes from current and
former members. The cookbook will
celebrate 100 years from 1912-2012
and will be available in the late
fall hopefully. Send your recipes
to Teresa Baan ASAP by March
20.
Celebrating birthdays this past
week include Carali McCall, Alex
Melady, Allison Baan, Colton
Hastings, Victoria Williamson,
Joanne Knight Black, Karla Kale,
Jo-Anne Workman, Parker
Grobbink, Lisa Gingerich, Jim
Humphries, Ross Mitchell,
Cassandra Banks, Edward Clark,
Ray Huether Jr., Celeste Ryan, Cora
Alcock and McKinley Ryan. Happy
birthday to all.
