SportsBulls take on Sturgeon Lake in OMHA final
The OMHA “E” final between the
Brussels Bulls and the Sturgeon
Lake Thunder is underway.
Sturgeon Lake Minor hockey is an
amalgamated entity of what was
once Bobcaygeon Minor Hockey and
Fenelon Falls Minor Hockey.
The Bulls travelled to Bobcaygeon
last weekend for the first two games
of a best-of-five series with games
three and four in Brussels this
weekend.
The first game was played on
Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. with the
boys feeling some nerves and
excitement being in an All-Ontario
final series. Sturgeon Lake got on the
board first halfway through the
period and carried a 1-0 lead into the
start of the second period before Jack
Pipe scored unassisted 33 seconds in.
But before the Bulls could get some
momentum, Sturgeon Lake restored
its lead 27 seconds after that.
The Thunder scored three more
unanswered goals in the period to
take a 5-1 lead, but with 1:58 left in
the second period Noah Terpstra
scored to cut the lead to 5-2 and then
seven seconds later Pipe bulged the
twine to cut the deficit to 5-3 after
two periods of play.
The third period saw a lot of
chances by both teams, but at 13:22
Pipe took a nice feed from Avery
McArter and got the hattrick to make
the score 5-4.
With the Thunder still reeling,
Terpstra was able to complete the
comeback when he buried the puck
behind the Sturgeon Lake keeper,
assisted by Hudson Smith. At the
4:42 mark, with some great chances
to seal the deal by both teams,
Sturgeon Lake was able to jam one
by Jarron Thompson with only 1:21
remaining. The Bulls were unable to
get the equalizer and the final score
was 6-5 for Sturgeon Lake.
The Bulls played well once they
got their legs under them and showed
a lot of character coming back from
four goals down after driving four
hours to play this team.
After a tough loss the day before,
the Bulls were set on revenge on
Sunday, after an inspirational pre-
game talk by Brody TenPas, captain
of the Brussels Bantam Bulls, the
boys were pumped heading out to the
ice.
With some extra energy and some
great chances by the Bulls, not to
mention a goal post, it was the
Thunder who scored first at the 6:14
mark of the period, but not to be
deterred, Pipe was able to get the
Bulls on the board at the 3:31 mark
and the first period ended tied at one.
The second period was very
exciting with both teams trading
opportunities, but at the 5:26 mark
the Bulls pulled out in front when
Pipe scored assisted by Terpstra and
McArter. The Bulls were hoping to
take a lead to the third, but with only
36 seconds reaming in the second
period, the remaining Thunder tied
the score on the powerplay.
The Bulls regained the lead when
Terpstra scored assisted by Nolan
Johnston at the 8:31 mark and then a
little under two minutes later, the
Bulls took a two-goal lead when Pipe
scored what turned out to be the
winner unassisted with 6:38
remaining in the game.
The Thunder, however, responded
with a goal of their own on the
powerplay again. With only a minute
remaining in the game, Sturgeon
Lake pulled the goalie in favour of
the extra attacker, but it was all for
naught as the Bulls were able to hang
on to get the split they needed
coming home for two games this
weekend.
This will be an OMHA series the
Atom Bulls will long remember as
they got to hang out with and cheer
on the Bantam Bulls as both teams
are playing Sturgeon Lake in the
finals.
Game three for the Atoms will be
this Saturday at 3 p.m. with the third
Bantam game following at 4:30 p.m.
Game four for the Atoms will be
Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. with the
Bantam game, if necessary,
following at 2:30 p.m.
Please come out and support these
kids, as they are playing some great
hockey against a higher category
hockey centre that has somehow
managed to stay in the “E” division
of OMHA.
A little preparation
The Brussels PeeWee Bulls had a bit of a tune-up on
March 9 playing the Arran-Elderslie Ice Dogs at the
Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre. The Bulls
played the Ice Dogs before heading to Young Canada
Week in Goderich this week where they took on Shallow
Lake, Milverton and Teeswater. (Jim Brown photo)
End of the year
As hockey winds down throughout Huron County, the Blyth
Lions Club held its annual year-end tournament for its
recreational hockey league. The River Rats took on the
Greyhounds on Saturday, March 12 at the Blyth and District
Community Centre. (Jim Brown photo)
