Our thorn!
(J.R. Miller,”The Blossoming of Our Thorns” 1905)
“To keep me from getting puffed up, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger
from Satan to torment me and keep me from getting proud.” 2 Corinthians 12:7
We do not know how much of Paul’s rich, beautiful life, and his noble work for his
Master -- he owed to his thorn. Just so, we do not know how much we are indebted
to our sufferings and sorrows. Our richest lessons -- are the fruit of pain, of
weakness, of sorrow.
There is not one of us who has not his own thorn. With one it may be a bodily
infirmity or weakness. With another it is some disfigurement which cannot be
removed. It may be some difficulty in circumstances, something which makes it
hard to live beautifully.
The Master told Paul that his thorn was necessary to him -- to save him from
becoming proud. We may think of our thorn, too -- as something we need. Instead
of allowing it to irritate us or to spoil our life -- its mission is to make us sweet,
patient, loving. Many people beseech the Lord to take away their thorn. Yet it may
be, that the prayer is not answered, will not be answered, should not be answered.
It may be, that the thorn is necessary to keep them humble at God’s feet.
God sends some of our best blessings to us in our thorns, and it will be a sad thing
if we thrust them away and miss them.

Blyth United youth to host Irish stew lunch
Greeting worshippers at Blyth
United Church on Sunday, March
13 were Barb and Doug Howson.
Ushering were Terry Richmond,
Doug Howson and Karen Glousher.
Floyd Herman was music director.
Rev. Gary Clark welcomed
everyone to church and drew
attention to the announcements
printed in the bulletin and the March
bulletin booklet. There was special
made that the ladies will be making
turkey pies on March 30. This might
be the last chance to order until fall
so if you wish to order given Joann
MacDonald a call at 519-523-9274.
He also drew everyone’s attention
that the Sunday School is having
events during the afternoons of
March Break from 2 - 4 p.m. with
different events each day. Everyone
is welcome to come and have some
fun.
Women’s Day Out is approaching
very fast on April 9 and preparations
are underway.
The Sunday School is providing a
lunch of Irish stew on birthday
Sunday, March 20 with donations at
the door.
The first hymn was “Throughout
These Lenten Days” was followed
by the prayer of approach and the
invocation was repeated
responsively, O God We Call”. The
scripture reading was from Luke 1:
46-56.
The children were asked to come
to the front for their storytime. Rev.
Clark asked the children how much
a penny was worth. He told them
that when the saying, “A penny for
your thoughts” was created at that
time a penny was worth more than it
is today.
When we share pennies, they
become worth a lot more than just a
penny. When we send our pennies to
the Mission and Services
Committee, the committee sends
them to countries which are in need
of help. Some are sent to schools
that provide breakfast and lunch for
street kids. Reid Button carried the
Christ Candle down to Sunday
School for a time of fellowship.
The choir favoured the
congregation with the anthem,
“Come and Sing”. Rev. Clark’s
message to the adults was “A penny
for your thoughts”. We are often
transported back to our younger
days by music we used to love.
Mary becomes pregnant and runs
away to Elizabeth’s because in those
days if you weren’t married and
became pregnant you could be
stoned to death. Elizabeth tells Mary
that the child she is carrying will be
fine and will change the world.
Mary reflects on her life and looks
for God’s guidance.
Disasters around the world, like
Japan make us feel lucky and our
problems seem so small. Mary sings
a song about the rich Romans giving
to the poor and the hungry were fed.
God works in us and gives us Hope.
Lent is a time for reflection in our
lives and that God will be with us.
The hymn, “Fairest Lord Jesus”
was sung followed by the offering
being received, the offertory
response, “O Jesus I Have
Promised”, the prayer of dedication
and the singing of the Lord’s Prayer
was followed by the hymn,
“In Christ There is no East or
West”, the commissioning and
benediction and the choral
response, “Throughout These
Lenten Days”. Everyone was invited
for coffee, treats and fellowship.

Southwest Local Health Integration Network (SW-LHIN) Proposal
A joint proposal has been submitted by the Listowel Wingham Hospitals Alliance, North
Perth Family Health Team and North Huron Family Health Team for SW-LHIN support
of a project that would map the current patient processes between primary care and the
Hospital. The goal of the project would be to determine situations where the transfer of
care and information between our organizations is less than seamless from a patient’s
perspective. Once the weaknesses are determined, we can then look to improve both
the system and patient experience.
