Happy St. Patrick’s Day all, even if
you’re not of the Irish bent.
The green decorations are all hung
up and looking good, so we can
celebrate family birthdays, Lindsay,
Val and Julie and the green day aswell. It’s always more fun when Ihave the grandgirls from Listowelhelping.
Listowel Paddyfest is in its last
days for another year, so lots of
music and games were enjoyed. We
hit a concert last week, organized by
the Perth Arts Council that had the
toes tapping as an Irish flute,
whistle, banjo, mandolin, accordion,
drum and guitar made their sounds
known in many Irish tunes. Stories
interspersed the music making for a
fun evening.
Very interesting that this is Farm
Safety Week and Nutrition month.
Maybe soon, someone in authority
will clue in that farms, Ontariofarms, are directly linked to ournutrition, and even our safety. When you think about quality of
food, deterioration in nutritional
value, food allergies and our need
for good nutrition, we need to spend
more thought and education on the
make up and intake of our food. Take
the time to know the source of your
food is that jam really from
Romania, and do we need to buy
carrots from Mexico or milk from
the U.S.A. So food shopping is time
consuming as you see how much salt
they added to the chicken and the
level of fat they tucked into the
crackers, besides where it came
from.Maybe one of the dieticians in ourmidst would set up a beginner foodintake course, much like a mechanic
tells you what your car needs to run
well. So be aware of all the
implications of Farm Safety Week
and Nutrition Month.
For all of us who stayed at home
this March Break, be thankful you’re
not flying away. The estimated
number of travellers at Toronto
Airport last Friday were 100,000
souls. That certainly made home
look good to me.
Enjoy the days of sun that are
becoming more frequent.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

Brussels Legion hosts meeting for feed program
By Jo-Ann McDonald
Meetings, darts and parties kept
the Brussels Legion Branch busy
this week. The Cadets met on
Tuesday evening, as usual, and
again on Sunday morning. They are
practising for drill competition
coming up soon. They have shown
improvement every year and are
looking good for this year. They are
still collecting pop cans and
returnable bottles and which can be
dropped off Monday or Tuesday for
pickup Tuesday evenings.
A meeting of area beef producers
was held on Wednesday evening.
They were discussing the
implementation of a new feeder calf
enhancement program – the basis
behind raising better calves for
better beef. The meeting was
organized by Harvey Hoggart with
over 30 interested parties in
attendance. They enjoyed a soup
and sandwich meal prior to the
meeting and discussions. Branch
helpers included Lisa Glanville,
Mary Bradshaw, Judy Lee, Mabel
Glanville, Linda Bird and Jo-Ann
McDonald.
The Thursday night darts had 14
darters aiming at the boards.
Winners were: first, Alice Clifford
and Gord Jacklin; second, Glenn
Zehr and Sandra Josling; high,
Marlene Glanville, 140 and Glenn
Zehr, 125. Glenn was also
recognized for the low shots of one
and a two.
The Friday night supper was
cancelled due to the bad
weather, and this week will be roast
pork.
It was a surprise for Brian Deitner
on Saturday evening when he
arrived at the Branch for a birthday
party for himself. He was told it was
for someone else and was very
surprised when he found out it was
for him. Nifty 50 is Brian. His
family and some of his friends
planned the occasion and kudos to
all those invited for managing to
keep it a surprise for him. The
nearly 100 gathered had a nice time
visiting, listening to the music,
enjoying lunch and especially the
birthday cake decorated as a
firefighter’s hat. Congratulations
Brian!
Comrades should have received
their newsletters in the mail. The
auction is our prime fundraiser for
the spring and every Comrade is
encouraged to participate.
Unique, interesting and original
ideas are encouraged to make the
auction appealing to all.
Please respond with your
donations by the deadline and
save someone making reminder
calls.
Every donation is appreciated.
Come out and support the Branch at
the auction on April 2.
