The Blyth Festival Singers will be
performing a rousing concert of
African-inspired and traditional
music in the marvellous acoustic
space of Clinton United Church on
Sunday, April 3.
It’s a date to mark on your
calendars as the Blyth Festival
Singers present “Jubilee! A
Celebration of African Musical
Heritage”. From the soulful strains
of “Steal Away” to the rollicking
“Hey Motswala!” and the colourful
lyrics of Jamaican work songs, every
number is a musical gem that has
been inspired by African musical
traditions. Add in some spirituals
and gospel and the afternoon will be
complete.
Topping off the concert is the
acclaimed jazz and gospel
sensation, Denise Pelley. Denise has
sung with orchestras as far afield as
Portugal and Germany and has
performed with many great artists
including trombonist Ray Anderson,
Gospel/Blues legend Jackie
Richardson and Flamenco guitarist
Jesse Cook. She has opened for the
likes of Aretha Franklin and
regularly enjoys performing with her
hometown Orchestra London’s Jeans
‘n Classics series. With seven
albums to her credit in a variety of
styles including jazz and gospel,
Denise is a featured entertainer at
large music festivals across Canada
including the du Maurier Downtown
Jazz Festival (Toronto), Ottawa Jazz
Festival, The Royal Canadian Big
Band Festival (London), London’s
Bluesfest, Waterloo Jazz Festival
and Sunfest in London.
Denise has also acted in musical
theatre at The Grand Theatre
performing in Ain’t Misbehavin,
Wang Dang Doodle and A Streetcar
Named Desire. Denise’s one-woman
show, “Jazzabel” premiered in
September 2004 at The Grand to
sold-out audiences. In October 2005
“Jazzabel” was performed in
Washington, D.C. at the National
Museum for Women in the Arts and
in February 2006 to audiences in
New York City at Urban Stages
Theatre. Denise has even caught the
eye of Oprah Winfrey, and was
featured in the February 2006 issue
of O Magazine.
In 2002, Denise was the recipient
of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee
Medal. In 2003 she was named a
YM-YWCA Woman of Distinction
in the Arts and Heritage category.
Denise won best jazz artist in
London, Ontario’s Music Awards in
2002, 2003, 2006 and 2008. In April
2006 she was presented with
Rotary’s highest honour – the Paul
Harris Fellowship Award. Most
recently Denise won 2008 Jazz
Artist of the Year at the Jack
Richardson awards. In February
2009 the London Black History
Committee honoured Denise with
the Black Community Achievement
Award in recognition of her
accomplishments, contributions and
support to her community.
Further afield, Denise is also a
volunteer with Canadian Aid for
Southern Sudan. For the past four
years she had travelled to Sudan to
deliver a music and art camp to the
Sudanese children.
The 60-strong Blyth Festival
Singers and the rich vocal stylings of
Denise Pelley are sure to make an
amazing combination and “Jubilee!”
is a concert not to be missed. The
performance begins at 2:30 p.m. on
