One Call M oves It All NH approves BIA trainingWork towards establishingBusiness Improvement Areas (BIA)in both Wingham and Blyth is receiving support from council as members of municipal staff received the go-ahead to attend a BIA conference in London in early April. Despite some concerns over costs, council approved a request for expenditures to be approved pre- budget so that the township could save money, which Councillor Brock Vodden felt was a good expenditure. “I don’t see this as a cost, I see it as an investment,” Vodden stated. “We experience some hesitation from Wingham and Blyth when working towards a BIA, it’s good to see this movement.”Councillor Ray Hallahan statedthat there were three wards, and thathe felt East Wawanosh wasn’t beingrecognized in this initiative, butDeputy-Reeve David Riach, a strong proponent of the creation of the BIAs, even before he joined North Huron Council, stated that any businesses interested in being involved from East Wawanosh was welcome to communicate with the Blyth Business Association. *** Councillor Brock Vodden thinks that North Huron Township is putting the cart before the horse with their branding initiative for Wingham. The township, on behalf of the town of Wingham, is using Blyth’s branding as an example. The township is looking to hire a firm tobegin creating the Wingham brand.Vodden feels that there needs tobe more direction from thecommunity about what they wantWingham’s brand to be before they start shopping around for a design firm. The branding will involve a logo for Wingham that will dictate the appearance of street signs, but it will, according to Reeve Neil Vincent, be some time before it is approved. “I’ve never seen a branding program approved on the first day,” he said. Council will see a study from the past year that saw several business members of the community interviewed to help determine a focus for the township By Denny ScottThe Citizen
