Skips and Stones – By Bruce Skinn Last weekend the Wingham Golf and Curling Club hosted the Belgrave Mixed Bonspiel. Organizers Linda Meier and John Nixon again did a superb job putting together a great prize table and the curlers supplied some good curling and lots of fun and laughs. Winners of the first draw was a Waterloo team made up of Troy and Sandra (Moffatt) Schmidt and Paul and Rita Ross. Fred Meier skipped his team to win the second draw with wife Linda and John and Joyce Thompson. The club would like to thank Leota King and Marg Moffatt for their super volunteer help. In regular league action the Monday daytime curlers closed out February with Wendall Stamper, Bruce Robertson, Norm Fairles, Bob Foxton, Barry Simpson and Hugh Clugston picking up wins. Monday night Archie McKean and Matt Cottrill helped curl their teams to victory. The Tuesday ladies league winning skips were Terri Forster, Sandra Morrison and Emily Elston. Tuesday night’s competitive league had Calvin Ruttan. Jim Ross and Shawn Cottrill skip their teams to wins. The Wednesday night teams picking up wins were Karen Burke, Rob Middleton and Robert Grein. Thursday daytime winners were Nelson Frank, Ron McMichael, Wendell Stamper, Bruce Robertson, Bob Foxton and Barry Simpson. Thursday Belgrave teams going home with wins were Larry Robinson, Fred Meier, John Nixon and Tom Coultes. Friday night Barry Simpson picked up his third win of the week with Brian Potter and Bill McDonald also coming out on top. On Saturday, March 12 the club is hosting the Country mixed Bonspiel. (Vicky Bremner photo) The Saugeen Maitland Midget AA Lightning battled back to eliminate the Waterloo Ravens in Lower Lakes League semi-final action last weekend. On Friday, the Lightning fell 4-3 to the hometown Ravens after tying the opening game the previous weekend. The win gave Waterloo a two-point advantage going into Sunday’s crucial match. In the deciding game, it was the Lightning who came out flying and jumped to a 1-0 lead on a nice shot from the slot by Laken Smith. The Lightning put the game away with a nifty deflection goal by Dollee Meigs on a shot from captain Gina Murray. The game ended 2-0 for the Bolts. With both teams sitting at three points each, they were required to play a sudden-death five-minute extra period to decide who would advance to the Southwest Division final. In the overtime it was strong forechecking by the line of Smith, Laura Irwin and Dollee Meigs that gave the Lightning the chance to end the series and it was Smith who was the hero when she banged home a rebound a minute into the extra period. Leading the way on the scoresheet with five points was Smith while Irwin and Meigs had a four-point weekend. Also picking up assists were Gina Murray (two), Georgia Ottewell and Brittany Butcher. Stephanie Sluys had the shutout in the deciding game. The Lightning will now meet the Bluewater Hawks in the division final. On Feb. 26, the Brussels Tyke Bulls hosted Wallace. It was a one- sided game for the Bulls, but Wallace was able to sneak two goals by Lucas Jacklin in the 8-2 win. Goals were scored by Christopher Pennington, Luke Fritz, Jackson McDonald Inglis, Mathew McKee and Bennett Smith with assists by Kyle Stevenson, Joel Nesbitt, Brett McCutcheon and Tyson Fischer. On Feb. 19, the Brussels Tykes were in Bayfield to play a team that had not lost a game all season. The Bulls gave the BCH Ice Dogs a run for their money and were strong at both ends with Pennington playing flawlessly in net, but he let eight pucks slide by, but BCH did the same so the game ended with a tie. Everyone played well.
