It was a week of weather that
covered most everything. There was
a covering snow, rain, fog, freezing
rain, cold temperatures, mild
temperatures, more rain, more snow.
A report of seeing a robin was given
to me about mid-week. It was on oneof the cold days, so I think that robinwas a little confused about being outand about. There is nothing like
spring!
Another week and Brussels
residents are touched with sadness.
Our sympathies are extended to the
family of George McCutcheon. His
daughters Pauline and Vonne and
their families and the extended
McCutcheon/Thynne families are
extended our condolences.
Our sympathies are extended to
the family of Ross Stephenson. Our
condolences to his wife Marie and to
his children Ross, Donna, Jean and
Les and their families. I had the
pleasure of meeting Ross manytimes over the years and he wasalways pleasant and smiling. I wouldhave a little chat with him and Marie
and would come away thinking what
a wonderful couple they were. Our
sympathies to his family and
extended family.
The loss of a child is devastating at
any time in life and our deepest
sympathies are extended to Jim and
Dona Knight on the passing of
daughter Carla. Carla was the
second daughter of their family and
sister of Brenda and Karen. Our
sympathies to her partner Steve
Menheere and her children
Alexander and Mark. Carla was
raised in Brussels and was a memberof the Brussels Leo’s and sheparticipated in a Lion’s InternationalExchange when growing up. Carla
became the fifth Canadian female to
earn her Balloon Pilot’s licence in
Albuquerque, New Mexico and then
was approved by the Canadian
Association. She participated in
weekends such as the Harris Park
Balloon Festival in London and was
a balloon pilot for over 15 years and
owned her own balloon. She loved to
watch her boys race Motocross at the
Walton and Auburn tracks. Our
condolences to the Knight family,
extended family and the Menheere
family.
Vacations are a welcome break
and many folks have been away
these past weeks. Returning from a
family vacation are John and Karen
Braecker and girls Holly and
Allison. They left on Feb.18 and
flew to Ft. Lauderdale. They headed
to Miami and boarded a ship to
cruise the Caribbean. They went to
the Bahamas, St. Thomas, U.S.
Virgin Islands and saw dolphins
swimming beside the ship. They
went to Puerto Rico and went on a
rain forest tour. The last port was
Grand Turk and they went
snorkelling in the ocean. They saw
all kinds of fish, a five-foot
barracuda and a sting ray they were
able to pet. It was really great. They
enjoyed lots of sun and lots of heat
and returned home after a great
week.
Bob and Joyce Alexander have
returned from a 17-day bus trip to
Florida. They were on a Hanover
Tour and their base was at Panama
City Beach in a beautiful condo.
They spent two days travelling there
and two days on the way home
again, so had 13 days to enjoy the
warm weather of Florida. They were
on the Gulf side of Florida but found
the Gulf water too cold for
swimming. It was a low-key holiday
with time spent reading, resting and
Bob making new friends. They went
to the Mardi Gras Parade and it was
great. They throw bead necklaces
from the floats and you have to try
and collect them. Joyce was a pro
and got 41 while Bob managed to
get 12. There were hundreds of
people watching the parade and it
was very good. The weather
temperatures ranged from the low of
55 to the high of 75. They enjoyed
being away but are glad to be
home.
Brussels-area folks enjoying a
two-week vacation in Florida were
Dave and Alice Marks, Glen
Johnston and Jane Hall. They flew to
Orlando to join the rest of the bus
tour friends. They were the only
Canadians on the tour and joined
folks from England, New Zealand
and 10 Americans to see the sights of
Florida. They headed for the Atlantic
Coast and travelled down to the very
tip of the Florida Keys. This is the
closest distance to Cuba, 90 miles,
and many Cubans try to come to the
U.S. via many means, rafts, small
boats or dinghies. The group went to
the Space Centre and to Sea World.
They saw a whale show, dolphin
show and a dog and cat show. They
were amazed at how well trained the
amazing acts of the various animals
were. They went to several
everglades and saw alligators. The
alligators would come almost right
up to them but Jane reports that they
did not try to pet them!
Returning from a trip to Cuba are
a few area folks. Darwin Ducharme,
Bev Stevenson and Pat Keffer along
with other friends had a great time
away. They met Pat and Darwin’s
brother, Les Ducharme and wife,
from the west there. The mini family
reunion was really enjoyed by them.
The weather was fantastic and the
resort really nice and Pat reports she
had a great time.
Fred and Teuni Smith have
returned from their two-week trip to
Panama. They have been to Panama
many times before and really enjoy
the resort and area.
The Cranbrook Dart Club had
around 20 out for a good time on
Wednesday night. The high shots
were by Pat Gillis hitting 114 and
Fred Smith hitting 112. It seems
Fred hasn’t lost his touch after being
south for two weeks in the hot sun.
Congratulations to Pat Dalton on
completing a two-year course on
becoming a Wedding Consultant.
She did her course online from the
Quality of Course School of
Wedding Planning in Ottawa and
sent assignments in when required.
She graduated with a top-of-the-
class finish. Pat has recently started
her business called Country
Wedding Consultant.
Congratulations to Geoff and
Michelle Dalton on the arrival of a
third child for their family. Baby
boy, Brady, is welcomed home by
big brother Brandon and big sister
Hannah. I’m sure crop advisor Ken
and Grandma Brenda are happy to
have another little farmer for the
next generation.
The Emmrich family, Clint and
Judy, had a special visitor on the
weekend. Their nephew, Fred
Hertlien of Vancouver, B.C. is here
in Ontario for a visit. He will spend
time with his mother, Shirley
Hertlien, of London as well as
catching up with many of the other
Thamer relatives. He will celebrate
his 40th birthday while here and had
a visit with Bill and Charles
Gulutzen and went to the Grain
Stoves shop.
The Good Roads convention was
held in Toronto at the end of
February and many local municipal
representatives and road personnel
were in attendance. Enjoying a few
days there were Joe and Rhonda
Ryan. Young son Johnny was very
excited at having holidays at
Grandma and Grandpa Ryan’s along
with little brother McKinley.
Brothers Adam and Owen spent
holidays with grandparents John and
Sheron Stadelmann in Blyth. A nice
break for them.
Patients in Seaforth Hospital
include Gerald Watson, who loves to
have visitors. Graham Work is there
for hopefully a short stay. We hope
he is feeling better soon.
The Grade 7/8 students of
Brussels Public School were at the
Brussels, Morris and Grey
Community Centre on Monday
learning the finer points of curling.
They will be out for a couple of
lessons as part of their curriculum in
sports.
Many people (kids) think curling
can’t be that hard: just heave throw a
rock to the other end of the ice, how
