Grey 4-H KnitWits think ‘Knitting is Kool’By Ryan BaanThe Grey Township 4-H Club heldits first “Knitting is Kool” meeting
on Saturday, Feb. 19 at the home of
Monique Baan in Walton.
The meeting was called to order
with the 4-H pledge. It began with an
introduction game involving toilet
paper. The leaders gave the club a
roll of toilet paper and members
were told to pass it around, and take
as many pieces of it as they thought
they may need. But they did not
know was it was for. Then for each
piece of toilet paper they had, they
had to tell the whole club something
about themselves.
Some members had to tell lots of
things about themselves, and others
told the club only one thing.
Elections were held for the club
executives: president is Johanna
Blake; vice-president, Chelsey
Terpstra; treasurer, Julia Nichol and
secretary/press reporter, Ryan Baan.
Members are Adam Baan, EmmaBaan, Femke Backx, IngridBoettcher, Katelyn Elg, Natalie Fear,
Samantha Fretz, Natalie Nichol,
Kelsey Rathwell and Emily Terpstra.
Leaders are Monique Baan and Barb
Terpstra.
Next, the club took the roll call,
and then began learning about
knitting. They learned the history of
knitting and what supplies you need
to be able to knit. Next, they learned
how to cast on stitches and how to
make the knit stitch. They practised
that for a while with the help of the
leaders and parent helpers and
closed the meeting with the 4-H
motto.
The second meeting of the Grey
Township 4-H Club’s new project
“Knitting is Kool” was held on
Saturday, Feb. 26 at the home of
Monique Baan in Walton.
The meeting opened with the 4-H
pledge led by President Johanna
Blake. The roll call was “name threedifferent items that you can knit andsell”. Then the club voted on a name
for the club for this project. Many
great ideas were given and after the
vote, members decided of the name,
KnitWits.
The minutes of the last meeting
were read by secretary Ryan Baan
and treasurer Julia Nichol gave the
treasurer’s report. Next, they started
knitting.
They began by casting off the
dishcloths that they made at the last
meeting. Then, they learned how to
do the purl stitch.
They practised doing that for a
little while, while the leaders helped
them to start their second dishcloth.
The meeting was closed with the
4-H motto.
THE EDITOR,
Where is the legislation?
The government of the day,
through the Minister of Veterans
Affairs, has made several
announcements and promises on Bill
C-55 (New Veterans Charter), which
has received first reading in the
House of Commons, but has not
progressed to the committee level.
Similar announcements and
promises have been made on Bill-
480 by the Minister of Finance
(Removal of GST from poppies
and wreath purchases) for which
no legislation has yet been
tabled.
As your readers know, the tabling
and passage of these bills with Royal
Assent will not be possible should
the government decide to call an
election. The Royal Canadian
Legion has written to both ministers
on the matters of legislative
procedure and has received
assurances that these matters are
being looked into.
These bills, however, may die on
the order paper if an election is
called and leave Canada’s disabled
veterans, their families and The
Royal Canadian Legion without the
legislation they all need. The Royal
Canadian Legion writes this letter
because it cares.
