By Koreen Moss 519-526-1060 kandkmoss@ sympatico.ca PEOPLE AROUND AUBURN ACW supports bill for grandparents’ visitation rights Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh (ACW) council decided to support Private Members Bill 22, a bill that sees visitation rights guaranteed to grandparents and grandchildren at the request of ACW resident Audrey Melkle. Melkle, who runs the Lucknow branch of Cangrands National Kinship Support, a group dedicated to helping families reconnect with each other, approached council with her own story, stating that she hadn’t seen her granddaughter since she was six months old. Melkle’s granddaughter, now five years old, lives five minutes away from her great-grandmother, according to Melkle, but has no contact due to a rift in the family. Bill 22 would prevent situations like this from happening, giving grandparents rights to see their grandchildren and no longer be “a third party in the court room,” according to Melkle. The exact wording of the bill indicates that, because of the emotional importance of maintaining ties between family, a person who has custody of a child shall not unreasonably place obstacles between them and their grandparents. Proposed by MPP Kim Craitor of Niagara Falls, the bill has been given a first and second reading and has been referred to the Standing Committee on Social Policy. Melkle came to council seeking a letter of support to be passed to MPP Carol Mitchell, MP Ben Lobb and Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty, stating she has received endorsements from other municipalities and groups. Councillors decided to support the bill, and forward it to all other Ontario municipalities so they can also support it. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, MARCH 3, 2010. PAGE 29.
