THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, MARCH 3, 2011.Sports A sure sign of spring being just around the corner is the winding down of the season for Blyth Junior broomball. The provincial broomball tournament was held in Stroud and Barclay arenas, just outside of Barrie, Feb. 11-13. This was a very competitive tournament where all Blyth teams proudly represented their hometown with some excellent games of broomball. There were some well-deserved wins and some heartbreaking losses, but each team can be proud of how well they played at the provincial tournament. The Blyth Silver PeeWee team ended up in fourth place out of 17 teams, narrowly missing out on a medal. On Feb. 18 and 19 Blyth finished its final ice time with some parents and siblings playing against the teams. This is always an enjoyable way to end the season. On Sunday, Feb. 20, families gathered upstairs at the Blyth arena to celebrate the season with a tasty potluck supper. This was a well-attended event and no one went away hungry. After the potluck meal, a short awards ceremony was held. All the coaches were thanked for making Blyth junior broomball such a fun and exciting sport. The league cannot exist without the help of all these coaches and assistant coaches donating their time, effort and enthusiasm. Hayter’s Excavating was thanked for donating a set of new team jerseys for a PeeWee team. Several more thank yous were mentioned before the awards were handed out. The individual awards handed out were voted on by the coaches, for the most improved (MI) and most dedicated (MD) for each team. Midget girls had Sarah Cook win the MI and Kelsey Kerr the MD. Midget Boys had goalie Bryce Glousher earn MI and Murray Dale the MD. Bantam girls awards were won by Monique Sluys for MI and Rachel Pryce MD. Bantam Boys MI was won by Dylan Walton and MD by Henri Frischknecht. PeeWee level is co-ed so boys and girls awards were handed out for each team. The Peewee Silver winners were MI, Rebecca Frawley and Dean Hayter; Jamie-Lee Eckert and Matt Colquhoun won MD. The PeeWee Ice winners were: MI Kaitlin Hoggart and Hayden Diebold; while Ashley Falconer and Reece Potter won the MD awards. After the awards ceremony the evening ended with a reminder that next year’s registration will be held on Aug. 27 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. and Aug. 31 from 7-9 p.m. at the Blyth arena. OUT OF THE HACK NEWS The Wingham Golf and Curling Club are looking forward to a busy March curling bonspiel month and are starting to gear up for the upcoming golf season. Come out and check out the early bird golf membership deals. Although the snow still sits on the ground, planning for the 2011 soccer season is well underway. Perhaps some people have heard the buzz concerning new and exciting improvements that are happening with soccer. This season marks something new and promising for the organization. Blyth Soccer has joined membership in the Elgin-Middlesex Soccer Association (EMSA) at the U14, U16 and U18 divisions. The league of nine towns, which includes Bayfield, Blyth, Brussels, Clinton, Goderich, Lucknow, Seaforth, St. Columban and Wingham have voted to go with EMSA; which makes Blyth a part of the Ontario and Canadian Soccer Associations and brings with it a number of changes. Among the benefits are referee and coach development and capabilities for the teams to join Ontario Soccer Association (OSA) tournaments. This also means having OSA referees controlling and supporting local referees. The referees will be carding players that have not shown proper soccer etiquette or sportsmanship. These actions will be recorded and there will now be a discipline body that will take care of suspensions for player, coaching and parenting issues. Another benefit of EMSA is that each town is allowed to have a free coaching and referee clinic, which is a great benefit to Blyth’s soccer league. The change would be that the referees could be coming from Stratford, London, Kincardine, etc. However, parents and players will not be travelling any further than they did last year. Local teams will be playing with the same league as in previous years within the nine towns mentioned above. As part of EMSA, parents and players will not have to travel any further as a U14 to U18 player than to the nine towns within the league. Also new to the league are the individual passbooks for the U14, Winter Sports Pages Blyth B u l l d o g s A t o m — B a c k r o w , f r o m l e f t : L o r e t t a T h o m p s o n , T r e v o r R a y n a r d , Aaron P o p p , T y l e r B l a c k , J o h n L e C o m t e , J e f f P l a e t z e r , M a t t h e w P o p p , F o u r t h r o w : Coache s K i r k S t e w a r t , C h a d H a g g i t t , C o l e S t e w a r t , K a r e n P e n n i n g t o n , D o r e e n Thomps o n , L i n d a P l a e t z e r , D o u g W a l k e r , L a r r y P l a e t z e r .
