HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2011-03-03, Page 2PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, MARCH 3, 2011. Winter is playing games with us and I like it. Just a touch of warmth, then back to snow. Pleasant, almost vest weather, then the cold returns. Who says weather isn’t interesting? Andrew Watson went to Ottawa with us last week. He was on business, checking out the universities that are on his list for September. Winter is a good time tosee the surroundings of Montrealand Ottawa, especially when youintend to spend years there foreducation. While there, we met up with my brother Jim, Beth and daughter Nicole. Nic is nearing the end of her degree in Thunder Bay and thinks Nunavut might be a good place to be sure she can be a teacher full time. So she flew out on Tuesday to see the far north in winter and to get her questions answered. She had three contacts, Peter Workman being one of them, and so via Kathy and Frank I know she got there and her questions were being answered. I’m so impressed when leaps of faith are made and wait in anticipation for the next chapter of the lives of Andrewand Nic.As you know from my ramblings,Ottawa is one of my favourite cities. No skating this year, the warmweather made the canal just a touch choppy. We used the time to check out the new Aviation Museum. Another good reason for you to go. They’ve done a marvelous job of displaying every kind of aircraft imaginable that has influenced our flying history. Information on the history, building and their acquisition is in front of each plane, so all your questions are answered so smoothly. It’s a kid friendly place with lots of space to roam. A peddle plane, available cockpits, lots of runningspace and craft tables made it a goodplace for kids to enjoy the time aswell as the parents. We were there onFamily Day and it was being wellused. Babies always bring out the best in people so when Cooper Harrison took time from his busy schedule to visit Soup and More 2 last Friday, many smiles were seen. Just before the visit Julie Harrison and Elaine Armstrong were sharing grandma stories about the new babies in their lives. So to Kip Armstrong and Cooper Harrison, welcome to our world. Enjoy the first days of March. Bye now, Betty G.W. By Betty Graber Watson Call 887-9231 A NOTE FROM BETTY NEWS FROM BRUSSELS At the Branch Branch seeks execs By Jo-Ann McDonald The Executive and General meeting of the Brussels Legion Branch were held on Tuesday evening. There were nine in attendance. Comrade President John Lowe conducted the meeting. The membership is an important problem of the Branch. Membership is declining and new members are needed to help keep the organization strong. The Legion supports not only its building, Veterans and Remembrance, it supports the community and many organizations throughout our community. The Branch needs some new members with new ideas so we can improve and grow in the community. Please consider this your invitation to join the Brussels Legion. Call Comrade Greg Wilson or the Branch for more information. Elections are slated for April and new executive members are needed. The normal term of office is for two years, but many of the current executive have served longer, because no new Comrades step forward. The executive of the Branch meets once monthly to consider the business of the Branch. They approve decisions affecting the financial aspects of the business, membership applications, requests for funds from outside sources, and any other considerations of business concerning the Branch. Chairmen of committees give reports on the various events of their committee or seek approval of events they would like to plan. Twelve meetings a year, about two hours a night. I would not like to mislead anyone by saying that that is all the time required of an Executive member. Depending on the committee you would choose to participate on, other time commitment would be needed, some at home or at the Branch. For example, the Sports Chairman is required to attend one District sports meeting, usually on a Saturday, outside of the Branch in the Spring. Posting sign up sheets and calling in registrations for events pretty well covers the position. There are other committees that require more time commitment or areas of expertise that you may process. We would like to hear from Comrades that feel they could give some time to a position on the Executive for the next two years. Please contact the Branch, Comrade John Lowe or any executive member. The Thursday night dart league had 16 darters taking aim at the boards. Winners were: first, Daisy Wong and Gord Jacklin; second, Roger McHardy and Kaye Smith; high, Linda Bird - 131, Penny Reynolds - 140, Tim Harrison - 140 and Gord Jacklin - 124. The honours of the third skunk of the season goes to the team of Bush Whittard and Sharon Robbins. The Friday night supper of sweet and sour meatballs, pork chops and rice had the smallest crowd of the year enjoying the meal. This week will be roast beef. The Branch had two mixed doubles teams competing in Zone competition in Wingham on Saturday. The team of Eric Ross, Sandra Josling, Bob Richardson and Monica Provost will advance to District competition in March. Team John Harrison, Deb Cann, Ken and Linda Bird had a good day. Mixed doubles was also played and the team of Eric Ross and Sandra Josling will advance for doubles play. Congratulations to all the Comrades. The Branch hosted the Huron Perth County Challenge for dart players on Sunday. There were about 34 men and one woman competing in doubles and singles competition. Helping out for the day were Jo-Ann McDonald, lunch, Monica Provost, bar, and Linda Bird, lunch, cleaning and bar. Good job ladies.
