Ironmen fight back to take lead in playoffs
After dropping the first game of
their best-of-seven semi-final series
with the Mitchell Hawks, the
Wingham Ironmen won the next two
games to take a 2-1 lead in the series.
Game four was played Tuesday in
Mitchell. Gave five is set for Friday
at the North Huron Wescast
Community Complex, beginning at 8
p.m. Game six, if necessary, will be
played Saturday in Mitchell at 7:15
p.m. and game seven, if necessary,
will be played in Wingham on
Sunday, beginning at 7 p.m.
Playing at the North Huron
Wescast Community Complex on
Monday evening, the Ironmen
scored a 5-3 win to take a two-
games-to-one lead in the series.
Jackson Martin got the Ironmen on
board at 16:35 of the first period,
with Blair Goss assisting.
Tyler Kellum made two with a
power-play marker at 3:02 of period
two. Brett Brophy and Chase
Chapman assisted. Cory MacDonald
gave Wingham a three-goal lead at
10:31 on the powerplay. Brophy and
Wade Stephenson assisted. A
powerplay goal by Chris Corbett at
10:55 made it 4-0. Brophy and Aaron
Armstrong assisted.
Ryan Magagnin got the Hawks on
the board at 16:30.
At 16:40 of period three, Tyler
Tolton got the Hawks to within two.
At 18:13, Tyler Egerdee put the
Hawks down by one. Kellum scored
an empty-net marker with six
seconds remaining in the game to
ensure the victory. Armstrong
assisted.
Coach Chad Haggitt said
Monday’s game was a lot better than
Friday’s contest. “We played like we
did on Saturday in Mitchell,” he said.
“We kept it simple and played hard.”
The coach said the Ironmen have
been receiving secondary scoring,
which helps the team. He indicatedthe Pellett line has been playingstrong, with Blair Goss also
contributing.
From a player’s perspective,
captain Chris Corbett said the game
went well.
“We lost a bit of the momentum in
the third period, but we persevered,”
he said. “Good teams always find a
way to win.”
Corbett said on Friday, the
Ironmen forgot that Mitchell was a
hard working team, especially after
playing Goderich in the semi-finals.
“It was a big change from playing
Goderich,” he said.
Corbett said they were able to get
things straightened out Saturday in
Mitchell. “We are on the right track
now, we are rolling,” he said.
The Ironmen got off on the wrong
foot on Friday as they dropped an 8-
4 decision to the Hawks. It was 2-0
after the first period and 8-1 after 40
minutes of play. Wingham scored
three unanswered third period goals.
Getting the goals on the Ironmen
were Graham Ashcroft, Martin,
MacDonald and Goss. Tyler Van
Drunen and Egerdee had two goals
apiece for Mitchell.
Coach Haggitt said it was an awful
game. “We weren’t getting the puck
out of our end,” he said.
Forward Evan Ducharme said they
weren’t playing their game in the
first two periods, but were able to
play their game in the third period
and the result was three goals.
Playing in Mitchell on Saturday,
the Ironmen scored a 6-2 victory to
even the series at a game apiece.
Kellum had a goal and two assists
to lead the offence. Chris Corbett
tallied a pair of goals, with single
markers coming from Goss, Pellen
and MacDonald.
Steve Chisholm and Brendan
Nicholson scored for Mitchell.

Bouncing back
After losing the first game in the series, the Ironmen won the next two games to take a two-
games-to-one lead over the Mitchell Hawks in their best-of-seven semi-final series. The
Ironmen play again on Friday, hosting Mitchell in Wingham, after playing the fourth game of
the series on Tuesday night. The Ironmen lost the first game of the series on Friday 8-4, then
won the second game on Saturday 6-2 before winning Monday night’s game by a score of 5-
3. (Jim Brown photo)
The Saugeen Maitland Bantam
AA Lightning travelled to Pickering
on the Feb. 11-13 weekend and came
away with a solid performance
against 25 other teams hoping to win
the Silver Stick honours.
The Lightning began their quest in
a tough pool as one of 26 teams
vying for the gold. In the first game
of the tournament, the girls beat a
tough Belleville team by a tight
score of 3-2.
The girls played Oakville in the
second game and skated to a tie with
the third-place team. Goals against
Oakville were scored by Miranda
Lanty and Taylor Weber.
The Lightning were left in a
position where they had to win their
third game in order to advance in the
tournament.
Taking on Etobicoke, the
Lightning started slow, but turned it
on later in the game, advancing into
the quarter-finals.
The girls then played Brampton in
what turned out to be a very fast-
paced game. The girls came out on
the wrong end of a 2-1 score. They
were unhappy with their
performance, but happy with how far
they had made it.

Brussels
beats
Wingham
The Brussels Tyke Bulls hosted
Wingham on Feb. 12 and it was a
great battle for the Bulls with plenty
of back-and-forth action that saw
Brussels emerge with a 7-5 win.
Brussels dominated the majority
of the game as goals were scored by
Bennett Smith, Luke Fritz and
Jackson McDonald Inglis. Assists
were tallied by Kyle Stevenson,
Brett McCutcheon and Tyson
Fischer.
