Bauer leads winning team
The Brussels Curling Club has
completed two draws for the season
and is very pleased with the turnout
of curlers this year. The new rocks
are really nice. It doesn’t seem to
take as much effort to throw the
rocks and they curl well.
New arena manager Abi Corbett is
trying hard to work the kinks
out of the ice and we hope
the new ice cleaner cloth will
help.
The curlers are having fun and our
oldest curler, Jean Bewley reports
that sometimes her feet won’t move
but her nose sure can run.
The winners of the first draw were
Merv Bauer skipping, Don Chesher,
Catherine Thomet and Cory
Campbell, 43; second, Orval Bauer
skipping, George Zwep, Maryanne
Bernard and Abbi Corbett, 42.5;
third, shared, 33.5, Mike Alexander
skipping, Dona Knight, Murray
Pepper and Charles Corbett share
with Murray Hoover, skipping,
Sandra Josling, Jeff Thompson and
Sandra Cable.
The second draw had more curlers
joining the night of fun which had
enough curlers for 12 teams creating
a bye situation for the draw. Winners
were: first, skipped by Steve Steiss,
Mary Ann Bernard, Jeff Cardiff and
Marsha Bietz, 45.5 points; second,
Doug Dale, skip, Dona Knight, Jeff
Thompson and Abbi Corbett, 40;
third, tied with 38 points each, skip
Steve Knight, Don Chesher, Debbie
Campbell and Holly McCutcheon
and Orval Bauer, skip, Annette
Lewington and Fred DeBoer.
The new draw starts this week and
a couple more curlers would be great
to round out the teams.
Give Steve Steiss a call and get on
a team for the last few weeks of the
year.
The senior students of Brussels
Public School are coming to learn
how to curl beginning on Monday,
Feb. 28. They are on the ice from 11
a.m. – 12 p.m. and anyone wishing
to help out can call Jo-Ann
McDonald. Help is needed in
teaching the proper delivery and
how to skip.
Give it a go
The Brussels Curling Club held free curling at the
Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre on Monday
for Family Day, inviting families and curlers of all ages and
skill levels in to give the sport a try. One of the youngest to
step up was Claire Mitchell who tried her hand at throwing
a stone. (Vicky Bremner photo)
On Wednesday, Feb. 16, a rare
event happened at the Wingham
Golf and Curling Club. The team of
Karen Burke, Shawn Cottrill, Scott
Miller and Dean Newson counted all
eight curling stones they threw to
score, to my knowledge, only the
second eight-ender ever at the club.
Burke executed a terrific double
takeout on her last rock to
accomplish the feat and even more
remarkable, the opposition team was
the first place team of Robert Grein’s
that on this night was being skipped
by Karen’s dad Earl Fitch.
In other regular league action the
Monday daytime curlers finished the
second draw with Ross Ludington
and Allan Webster skipping their
team to victory.
The Tuesday ladies’ winning
teams were Cathy Skinn, Emily
Elston, Amy Miller and Kelsie
Eadie. The Tuesday competitive
league had Rob Middleton, Calvin
Ruttan and Shawn Cottrill pick up
wins. The Wednesday mixed league
winners were Burke, Jenn Elston
and Scott Bridge teams. Thursday
daytime winners were Neilson
Frank, Wendell Stamper, John
Mann, Mac Inglis, Barry Simpson
and rookie skip Clayton Ruppel.
The Belgrave league had skips
Niel Edgar, Fred Meier, Larry
Robinson and Murray Shiell go
home with victories. The Friday
night mixed teams and ladies
bonspiel winners will be published
next week due to the early deadline
because of the family day
holiday.
OUT OF THE HACK
The spring temperatures last week
had lots of eager golfers looking
forward to spring. Golfers don’t
forget to take advantage of the early-
bird discount!

Bantam Girls start
playdowns with win
The Blyth/Brussels Bantam girls
opened up their provincial
playdowns against the Upper
Maitland Mustangs in Howick on
Feb. 16 and came away with a
convincing 6-2 win.
There are six teams in the
southern loop who face off in a
home or away game. Blyth/Brussels
will compete against Upper
Maitland, St. Marys, Seaforth,
South Huron and Lucknow.
At the end of the series, the two
teams with the most points advance
to the provincial finals in Brampton
in April.
With three minutes left in the first
period on Feb. 16 Shelby
Hinschberger opened up the scoring
by one, timing a pass from Ashley
Delapena. A minute later Ashley
Higgins scored unassisted.
In the second period, the girls
were on fire. With a man advantage,
Higgins scored on a pass from
Delapena.
Upper Maitland responded a
minute later with an unassisted goal
by Rachel Goetz. Mackenzie
Nesbitt fired one past the goalie
unassisted.
Leanne Plunkett fired a rocket
shot from the blue line to make the
score 5-1. With two minutes left in
the second period, Higgins rounded
out her hattrick with a goal assisted
by Jessica Thompson.
Upper Maitland opened up the
third period with a goal by Regan
Miller, assisted by Goetz (and a
defenseman’s skate). This would be
the only goal of the third period
ending the game with a score of 6-2.
Lindsay Shiell protected the
Blyth/Brussels net. Sydney Carson
was in net for the Upper Maitland
Mustangs.
The Blyth/Brussels Bantam girls
return to Blyth on Thursday to face
off against South Huron at 7:30 p.m.
The final game of the series will
see Blyth/Brussels travel to
Lucknow on March 2 for a 7 p.m.
start.
Lightning make tournament finals
The Saugeen Maitland PeeWee
AA Lightning travelled to Pickering
for the Feb. 11-13 weekend to
participate in their first AA
tournament since moving into the
division.
On Friday afternoon the girls took
on Kingston and squeaked out a win
by the slimmest of margins, 1-0.
After that big win, the girls
needed another against Durham
West to lock down first place.
The girls came out blazing on
Saturday morning against the
Durham West team, continuing the
tournament shutout streak, beating
the host team by a score of 2-0,
setting up a contest with their ranked
opponents, the Clarington Flames,
in the semi-finals.
The Lightning outshot the Flames
11-2 in the first period, but the score
was deadlocked at one at the end of
the first. In the second, the
Lightning began to run out of gas as
the Flames capitalized and took a 2-
1 lead.
The Flames eventually won the
game by a score of 3-1 and went on
to win the tournament.
The girls are now looking forward
to a rematch with the Flames in the
provincial tournament.
Big win
The Brussels Atom Rep Bulls hosted the Listowel Cyclones on Saturday at the Brussels,
Morris and Grey Community Centre and came away with a big win by a 9-4 margin. The Bulls
host Mitchell in their next game on Friday. (Vicky Bremner photo)
